Annotation of Qualitative Research Paper
Yuan, H., Clifton, D. O., Stone, P., & Blumberg, H. H. (2000). Positive and negative words: Their association with leadership talent and effectiveness. The Psychologist-Manager Journal, 4(2), 199-214. doi:10.1037/h0095892
Summary
This was a qualitative research study examining the existing relationship between positive and negative language, leadership talents examined on basis of a structured interview, and the general effectiveness which was assessed by application of a 360-degree feedback approach. The study sample comprised of 804 high level executives selected from a number of both private and public organizations. The results indicated that most leaders use up-to four times as many negative and positive sentiments or words. Most of the negatively applied words demonstrated a clear discriminating impacts on basis of leadership assessment with regards to one’s talent and effectiveness. On the hand, however, positively used words did not pose any discrimination aspect during assessment of leadership programs. The general results lead to development of an intuitively surprising inference that concluded that both the words negativity and positivity are independent variables as opposed to people’s perceptions that they were bi-polar. Some of the general differences that were outlined concluded that most female gendered leaders applied fewer negative words in communication, despite the general unfavorable impact of their negativities on leadership effectives.
Analysis
Despite the fact that words and general word senses displayed in the category of negative words outdo the number of words in the positive category, the general word occurrence on the positivity end was significantly higher as compared to the negatively used ones. This is a selective positive language trend that implies most people use more positive words in communication for effecting the general leadership effectiveness. This was a considerable factor that was generally perceived by other group members was way stronger as compared to the one reflected in the males’ group. Finally, it outlines the general possible explanations regarding the existing correlations between leadership performance and existing word categories. In most cases, higher associations often emerge whenever applicants for a particular job positions or rather leaders holding different levels in performance are included in the same categorizations for generating a given sample.
Application The above study can be applied in the field of psychological studies on drawing conjectures that people classified in the positive words category reveal the positivity nature of a human being while those grouped in the negative categorization brings out the negativity aspects. All applicable assumptions are, therefore, readily applicable in outlooking or reflecting positive and negative word usage. The existing efficiency in computing technologies plus other advances made in the technological field regarding the success of this research is a very crucial aspect. As a matter of fact, it creates a direct diversification chance for a wide range of psychologists by ensuring success in accomplishing their set research projects. All aspects of positivity and negativity alongside other words relating the GI categories can form a measurable variable on a large extent of English text input among all interested researchers. The main advantage to this is the fact that it entails minimum levels of training to aid skills acquisition.
