In the course of the nursing career, leadership is inevitable. Nurses are often called upon to lead groups, share knowledge, as well as, learn from others. In order to be an effective group leader, the nurse should integrate the democratic and autocratic leadership styles. This essay presents a summary of the article by Dyczkowska and Dyczkowski (2018), showing its links to the concept of group leadership

In the article by Dyczkowska and Dyczkowski (2018), empirical evidence was used to support the aforementioned integration so as to foster group member satisfaction. Results of data collected from 93 SMEs and 86 large companies showed that the democratic leadership modality is highly effective in a large group, since it ensures that the individual’s voice is heard and job satisfaction is fostered (Dyczkowski & Dyczkowska, 2018). It was also apparent that an integration of the democratic and autocratic leadership style is more effective and bears more job satisfaction in a smaller group.

This article is relevant to this module’s topic of group leaders because it seeks to provide direction regarding the leadership modalities that should be utilized by different group leaders.

Conclusively, concept of leadership is inevitable in the nursing career. An effective group leader should integrate democratic and autocratic leadership styles. They should balance participative management as an indicator of democratic leadership and authoritative management as expected in the autocratic form of leadership.
