Business Ethics

The article gives an account of Andrew Pearse’s involvement in a vicious cycle of bribery, which began out of the desire to get funds necessary to start a financial boutique with a colleague with whom they had an affair. Privinvest Group extended its engagement with Mr. Pearse to acquire better deals from Credit Suisse Group, with the plans extending beyond the security surveillance system to incorporate deals on fishing boats and a shipyard (Patrick and Wirz n.p). Upon his arrest, Pearse, alongside his former lover, Detelina Subeva, and a former colleague, Surjan Singh, pleaded guilty of the fraud charges. The trials further open up episodes of unethical practices, including tax evasions, bribery, manipulation of financial systems, which helped Mr. Pearse’s new investment to thrive as he received great financial deals at lower costs (Patrick and Wirz n.p). This leads to the primary ethical question, why didn’t Mr. Pearse make a rational decision concerning the love affair he had with Detelina and defrauding his employer Credit Suisse Group?

Deontological ethics helps in developing a critical examination of this case and the reason for Pearse’s involvement in stealing, embezzlement, taking bribes, and having extramarital affairs. Deontological ethics refers to the ethics of duty; therefore, it focuses on the individual’s obligations and responsibility when engaged in decision-making that requires significant ethics levels. According to this approach, upholding an individual’s duty has an ethical consideration, which demands that Mr. Pearse remain faithful to his obligations and responsibility to the employer, Credit Suisse Group (Patrick and Wirz n.p). However, because he opted to neglect his obligations and prioritize how to make their affair with Detelina flourish through the purported boutique, Mr. Pearse behaved unethically and went against his obligations and duty to keep his employer safe, thereby going against the theory of deontology.
