Principles of Deontology, Utilitarianism and Virtue Ethics
Deontology ethical theory uses rules to differentiate between right and wrong. Renowned philosophers such as Kant acknowledged that moral activities obey all universally known moral laws (School of Business, n.d.). Moreover, deontology theory necessitates that individuals stick to the rules and do what is expected of them. One should not lie or cheat.
Utilitarianism theory regulates right from wrong by focusing on the results. Moreover, utilitarianism elaborates that the outcome of a major moral decision will be of great benefit to the person concerned (School of Business, n.d.). Besides, utilitarianism theory is utilized in business as profits directly affects the expenses incurred (School of Business, n.d.). Utilitarianism highlights that happiness is what truly has value and actions done by people are right as long as they bring happiness.
Virtue ethics is a character-based ethical theory that accepts that we secure good virtues through experience acquired through training (School of Business, n.d.). People with moral behaviors individuals will do the right thing when confronted with moral difficulties.
The Major Differences between Deontology, Utilitarianism and Virtue Ethics
In deontology ethical theory, one should never lie or cheat. People should always observe moral laws (School of Business, n.d.).On the other hand, in utilitarianism theory, an action is viewed as right or wrong and affects the outcome of the action (School of Business, n.d.).Virtue ethics itself focuses on the moral habits of a person. If the morals are good, then then individual do the right thing. However, if their habits are bad then the results of their actions are expected to be negative.
Analysis of Abortion.
Utilitarianism ethical theorists will support abortion as they will argue that it is significant to save the life of the mother. On the other hand, deontologists will resent abortion because it is an unethical activity (School of Business, n.d.). A virtue ethicist will analyze the virtuous habit of the lady or woman carrying the pregnancy first. From that, they can know whether the lady can commit abortion or not.
