Costa, R., Rucker, P., & Bade, R. (2019). Pelosi’s delay sparks standoff with Senate GOP over Trump impeachment trial. The Washington Post. Retrieved on Dec 22, 2019 from, https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/pelosis-delay-sparks-standoff-with-senate-gop-over-trump-impeachment-trial/2019/12/19/83cc3a1a-2270-11ea-a153-dce4b94e4249_story.html
Just like Leibovich and Rodgers (2019) and Mindock et al. (2019), this article reports that on Dec 18, 2019, Trump became the third president in U.S. history to be impeached by the House of Representatives. Trump was impeached by the House over accusation that he has abused the office of the president and obstructed Congress from investigating him. These accusations have also been mentioned in the above two articles. It gives a new turn of events. Of interest is that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has delayed transmitting impeachment articles to the Senate until Mitch McConnell establishes rules for the trial process. According to Pelosi, the rules must be acceptable to the Democrats in the Senate. Pelosi as reported is determined to ensure that she maintains control of the impeachment process. It is predicted that trump may be acquitted by the Senate. This is because Trump has a partisan support advantage in the senate. The Democrats have only 47 members in the senate and it is a requirement that 67 senators out of 100 must vote in support of the impeachment motion for him to be impeached.
Mindock, C., Feinberg, A., & Sommerlad, J. (2019, Dec 19). Trump impeachment: House impeaches president in historic vote along party lines. The Independent. Retrieved on Dec 21, 2019 from, https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-impeachment-vote-live-house-hearing-news-today-latest-twitter-ukraine-a9252386.html
This article covers impeachment of the U.S. president, Donald Trump, by the House of Representatives on Dec 18, 2019. According to Mindock, Feinberg, and Sommerlad (2019), the house voted in favor of an impeachment motion against Donald Trump. The vote made him the third president in U.S. history to experience such a censure. The House of Representatives accused the president of abusing his powers by trying to extort Ukraine by demanding for a political favor. As per the authors, this accusation was voted as the first article of impeachment. On the second article of impeachment, he was accused of obstructing the Congress on matters relating to congressional investigations of his conduct. Senate is set to take up the approved impeachment articles in the New Year, that is 2020 (Mindock, Feinberg, & Sommerlad, 2019).
The article further states that Trump has continued his defiant behavior as ever. When the impeachment vote was underway, he was onstage at a rally in Michigan. On the stage, he mocked stock market fears and bragged about Space Force program. At the rally, a female protester interrupted him; when he pointed out that the woman should have been treated tougher by the security forces and should have not been allowed to interrupt him. The impeachment motion was a strong show of commitment by the U.S. House of Representatives to protect the constitution and to send a strong message that no one is above the law (Mindock et al., 2019).
Leibovich, M., & Rogers, K. (2019, Dec 18). Impeachment day in Washington: history emerges from the routine chaos. The New York Times. Retrieved on Dec 22, 2019 from, https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/18/us/politics/trump-impeach.html
The article by Leibovich and Rogers (2019) covers President Donald Trump’s impeachment. It reports that he is the 45th president of the United States and the third to be impeached (Leibovich & Rogers, 2019). This record is similar to what has been reported by Mindock et al. (2019). Trump is described to be haunted by the impeachment drawing from the letter he had written before to the Democrats where he described impeachment as “lynching”, “an election-nullification scheme”, and an “attempted coup”. On Wed 18, 2019, the Democratic-led House of Representatives voted on an impeachment motion against Trump following the accusations that he obstructed Congress and abused his power. Unlike Mindock et al.’s (2019), the article does not make further accusations about trump accusations. However, it mentions that Trump was in a rally in Michigan when the impeachment vote took place.
