Advanced Practice Nurse Professional Development Plan
Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) competencies include integration of clinical skills associated with medicine and nursing to assess, diagnoses, and manage patients in the acute care and the primary care settings as well as provide continuous care for populations with chronic illness (Schlunegger, Aeshlimann, Palm & Zumstein-Shaha, 2021). Nurse practitioners (NPs) can achieve better or equal health outcomes, and higher quality of life and slightly higher quality of life for their patients compared to physicians (Schlunegger et al., 2021). This paper discusses the scope of practice for advanced practice nurses, nurse practitioner competencies, licensure and education requirements and leadership skills. Advanced practice nurses have full-practice authority in Florida, but they should work in close collaboration with other healthcare practitioners such as physicians.
APN Scope of Practice
Upon graduation, I would like to practice in Kissimmee City, Florida, United States. Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) in the state of Florida have full practice authority as from July 2020. For full practice authority, APNs must have completed at least 3,000 hours of clinical experience under physician supervision so as to have the right to operate independently in Florida without physician supervision (Daily Nurse, 2020). Besides, APNs must have completed minimum graduate level coursework in pharmacology and differential diagnosis. In Florida, APNs are able to practice independently in general pediatrics, family medicine, and general internal medicine. However, full practice authority does not cover certified nurse anesthetists and physician assistants (Daily Nurse, 2020).
The Florida Board of Nursing credential APNs in Florida. Nurse midwives and nurse anesthetists are eligible for state credentialing as APNs. Clinical nurse specialists have a different licensing process. APNs must also be licensed as registered nurses in Florida. APN must have completed a master’s degree or post-master program. Licensing boards recognized in the State of Florida administrative code include American Association of Critical-Care Nurses; American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; American College of Nurse Midwives; American Nurses Credentialing Center; National Certification Corporation of OB/GYN; Council of Nurse Anesthetists; Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation; National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses, and National Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Associates (Nursing Licensure, 2021). Additional requirements include mandatory completion of a two-hour course in prevention of medical errors and an APN must have liability insurance (Nursing Licensure. (2021).).
NP Core Competencies
The core competences of the NPs as outlined by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) include quality, scientific foundations, leadership, practice inquiry, policy, technology and information literacy, health delivery system, ethics, and independent practice. A NP should demonstrate these competencies before graduating from a nursing school (Nurse Practitioner, 2021).
Two competencies that are believed to be student’s personal strengths include scientific foundation and ethics. Scientific foundations include developing an ability to think critically based on provided data and apply evidence to improve practice. Besides it includes utilizing knowledge from various disciplines to inform nursing practice. Research foundation competencies also include incorporate research findings so as to enhance patient outcomes and practice methods. In addition, scientific foundation also includes creation of fresh evidence-based approaches as well as techniques, and evaluating research findings, experience from practice and core theory (Nurse Practitioner, 2021).
The healthcare system is characterized by complexity. Thus, nurses should be competent enough to recognize and address ethical issues. Ethical awareness involves recognition of ethical implications of all nursing actions and it is considered as the first step in moral action (Milliken, 2018). Nursing ethics education enables nurses to navigate through nursing dilemmas and challenges. Nursing actions should be directed at promotion of the key principles of ethics including principle of autonomy, nonmaleficence, justice, and beneficence (Milliken, 2018). Ethical concerns that nurses may face include informed consent, truth-telling, protecting welfare of patients, protecting the rights of patients, and protecting families in decision making (Hoskins et al., 2018).
Student nurses have opportunities for growth in leadership and technology and information literacy (Nurse Practitioner, 2021). NPs may not necessarily hold formal leadership positions in healthcare organizations, but are always leaders and their leadership competencies may span all disciplines. Nursing education programs, nurses, and nursing associations should prepare the workforce to assume leadership positions at all levels. Nurses should develop leadership skills such as ethical skills and legal skills (Brunt & Bogdan, 2020). Besides, nurses have opportunities to improve their information and technology skills and to learn on how to utilize various technological tools. Utilization of technology can improve student nurse knowledge, learning outcomes, and prepare them to for the technological competent workforce (Schindler et al., 2017).
There are some scholarly activities that can be done during the master’s program to help students achieve NP competencies. These activities include conduction of nursing research and policy advocacy. Research activities can facilitate improvement of evidence-based practice, attitudes, and knowledge to improve quality and safety of practice (Li, Cao, & Zhu, 2019). Policy advocacy is necessary for the change of policies and implementation of existing policies (Li, Cao, & Zhu, 2019).
Three leadership skills required to lead as an NP within a complex healthcare system include communication, change management, and emotional intelligence. An NP should be competent in both spoken and written communication. Active listening sets the tone for successful communication experience. Mastery of communication can improve successful outcomes across other skills (University of North Dakota, 2019). NPs should be able to manage change in a way that reduces uncertainty and ease the stress associated with the change process. Leaders should plan early for change and collaborate with others in implementation of the process of change (University of North Dakota, 2019). Emotional intelligence involves the ability to promote awareness and bring empathy to interpersonal interactions so as to better understand and communicate with various persons in different situations (University of North Dakota, 2019).
NPs can develop their NP leadership skills by pursuing lifelong learning and mentorship. Leadership skills can be developed through an involvement in personal development classes and by taking personal classes. Education and training are recommended for nurses who want to enhance their leadership skills. Lifelong learning enables nurses to be up-to-date with current technological developments and research. A leader should attend continuing education seminars, workshops, and conferences (American Mobile, 2019). On the other hand, mentorship is beneficial in development of leadership skills (American Mobile, 2019).
APNs enjoy the right of having full-practice authority in Florida. They can operate independently of the physician supervision. APNs competencies include improvement of the quality of care, scientific foundations such as scientific research, leadership skills, practice inquiry, policy, technology and information literacy, health delivery system, ethics, and independent practice. NPs can perform important leadership roles in health care organizations and it is important if a NP possess leadership skills such as having effective communication skills, change management strategies/skills, and emotional intelligence. NPs can further enhance their leadership skills through lifelong learning and mentorship.
