So here is the story, I had someone from this site write the first paper. It was terrible. You’ll see. I need you to edit their work. I will include the powerpoint
presentation I gave already on this topic, you MUST follow that information but ALSO, read the notes my instructor gave me after presenting. He wants more
details on claims I made, and expects excellent work. I wrote his notes here in this message. I am also going to include scans of additional book sources I
would like you to include in the paper. There are highlighted sections in there with good information. It provides contextualization that supports the thesis.
Essentially, I want you to discuss how portraits like these led to the Mexican revolution. You will likely need to research more on that. I made the mistake of
claiming the creoles, or criollos, were the ones the population hated, that is not true, they were the ones leading the revolution. Read the notes, find some
info. The paper is already laid out, but it needs someone to tie it all together. That is where you come in.
Hi Robert,
This was a very informative and well illustrated presentation. Please see below a few things that you need to/should address in your final paper:
1. Remember to include the name of the museums for your chosen works, and the size.
2. Discuss further the history and lineage of both sitters. Since we don’t know much about the artists, it is important that you delve further on the sitters,
especially since they both were prominent members of the Mexican nobility. Remember that both were criollos/creole, not Spaniards from Europe.
3. Make sure you clarify your comments on royal status. The sitter was not a viceroy, and not a member of the royal family, so explain that statement. Also,
why the red color is associated with patriotism? That needs to be clarified. Plus remember that criollos, in most cases, didn’t side with Spain and the
Spaniards at the time of Mexican independence.
4. Your analysis of the clothes and artifacts used by the sitters needs to be more detailed and further developed. Explain what fabrics/textiles she is using,
the name of the types of clothes he and she are using, including that unique headdress she is wearing.
5. The Brooklyn Museum of Art (see the website) includes the full narrative of the cartouche in the male portrait. If you can find a translation, it will provide
more useful information.
