QUESTION

Capstone Project: Exercise Science-Head Personal Trainer

During SPHE 490 you will be working on your Senior Capstone Project. This Senior Capstone Project is an additional and separate project from the Personal Portfolio. The Senior Capstone Project is not a traditional Capstone Project but one that is designed to place Sports and Health Sciences degree students in the role of the decision maker. You have been “hired” and given a “job/project” to complete. Each individual project is based on realistic scenarios and situations in multiple aspects of sports and health science businesses that involve a particular company, event, or cause. The objective of each Capstone Project is to require students to research information relevant and current in today’s sports and health science industry, make decisions that impact sport organizations, and apply theory to practice.
Capstone Projects will be provided within the specific concentration areas of Coaching Studies, Exercise Science, General, and Fitness and Wellness Professional Studies. Each student will select a project related to their concentration within the Sports and Health Sciences degree program. If your concentration is “General”, then you are allowed to select the Capstone Project that applies best to your career focus. The Capstone Project will focus on an individual situation that allows students to research and analyze information to provide a comprehensive presentation containing creative solutions. The presentation should demonstrate an inclusive understanding of program level objectives, key coaching, exercise science, fitness and wellness, and sports and health science concepts, critical thinking, reflective practice, constructive analysis, ability to make executive level decisions, and overall ability to write efficiently.
APA 7th Edition Formatting
Your Senior Capstone Project Reference Page and in text citations MUST be written in APA style. Please refer to the 7th Edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), the Center for Teaching and Learning Student Resources area, and/or http://www.apastyle.org/ for assistance. There are also various documents and tools in the online classroom related to APA to help you along the way.
Capstone Project Tools
Your Capstone Project format should use a variety of tools to showcase your work. The meat of the project should be in a word document that points the reader “your boss” to the intended document for clarity. The additional tool choice should be based on the best way to showcase and display specific sections of your work. For example, an employee manual in Microsoft Word, an employee schedule in Excel, a YouTube video to showcase a training procedure, or a Power Point presentation for a workout plan.
Power Points are not recommended as a formatting tool for the entire Capstone project. (The reason is that power points are meant to be conversations starters – see any TedTalk video for reference, each power point slide enhances what the speaker is saying, but does not speak for the speaker – meaning each power point slide should not be a flyer containing all of the necessary information within a topic heading. Its too much information on one slide.) Despite all of this, if you would like to use a power point slide presentation within your Capstone Project you must attain approval for its use. And your initial submission and final submission must contain an accompanying word document where each power point slide’s talking point is fully addressed using 250-500 words per slide.
You have a great deal of latitude with how your Capstone Project is presented and what appears inside. Ensure it is professional, yet maintain the creative aspects necessary to advance your project.
Capstone Project Objectives

1) Require students to research information current to today’s industry.
2) Make strategic decisions that impact sport organizations.
3) Apply theory to practice.
4) Enable students to execute creative solutions.
5) Demonstrate critical thinking.
6) Build/develop constructive analysis.
7) Demonstrate an ability to make executive level decisions.
8) Demonstrate ability to write efficiently.
9) Provide examples of leadership.
10) Establish methods of management that promote teamwork.
Capstone Project Scenario Choices
Each student will select a specific Capstone Project scenario related to their concentration within the Sports and Health Sciences degree program. “General” concentrations may, select the Capstone Project scenario that applies best to your career focus.

Exercise Science: Head Personal Trainer
You have been hired, as a Head Personal Trainer, by a local gym. The Gym contains a consistent membership base of 1,000 members. Your primary job is to design and implement a for profit personal training program. Currently the gym offers memberships that include use of the facilities and access to all Group Fitness Classes but no personal training for members. Your program must include a personal training program mission statement, number of necessary personal trainers, your job description as head personal trainer, staff personal trainers’ job descriptions, staff personal trainer’s hiring process, and a payroll criteria – for trainers: how you will record personal training sessions, collect funds for personal training sessions completed, and distribute trainer’s cut of personal training fee. Provide an overview of gym’s facilities. You must also provide a daily trainer work schedule covering all hours the gym is open, a member fitness assessment protocol – including sample beginner workout, and a private personal training client assessment protocol – including a sample workout for a specific client. (You may not use a client or a plan from a previous course.)
The owner of the gym desires to gain additional profit from her members. Be sure to explain in detail the profits that will be gained through your program. You will also need to establish a personal training program marketing plan. This is in addition to the gym’s marketing plan. In this scenario you get to choose what is in your gym. The only restrictions are that it already includes group fitness and basic cardio and resistance equipment. Remember to choose a specific location and define your clientele using actual demographics and specifically those demographics that are included in the 1,000 current gym members. Your plan is to be submitted to the owner (your instructor) of the facility for review. *This Scenario is in a “world” where a COVID-19 vaccine has been created. There will still be sanitary precautions that are more in depth, but not necessarily to the extent that we are required to go through now.

Paper needs to be between 20-40 pages, and 15-25 references. I have chosen exercise science- head personal trainer. Attached is the rubric, the complete instructions, and my outline that I submitted as preliminary work. The outline is not set in stone or doesn’t have to be. What I have in the table of contents I for sure will need. Charts I will need is one for trainer/gym schedule and also a sample 3 day workout split for beginners.

Capstone Project Scenario Choices

Each student will select a specific Capstone Project scenario related to their concentration within the Sports and Health Sciences degree program. “General” concentrations may, select the Capstone Project scenario that applies best to your career focus.

Concentration Areas:

Coaching Studies

You have been hired by a local sports club to design, with the intent of implementation, a youth sports camp.  You may choose any single sport.  Or you may choose multiple sports for the camp.  This can be an independent camp or a camp belonging to a college or pro team run by coaches and players.  You may choose your location.  Two hundred (200) campers, ages 8 – 16, will be in attendance.  Campers ages 8 – 11 will be day campers. Campers ages 12-16 will be overnight campers.  Develop all the elements necessary to produce this youth sports camp.  For example you will need to develop a camp mission statement, a daily schedule – remember over night campers require a 24-hour schedule, budget, cost, necessary staff, staff hiring process, equipment necessary, facilities, insurance, payroll, drills and specific method of instruction – lesson plans, etc.  Your presentation must be available for submission to the host facility, available for staff to review, and web site publication. *This Camp is in a “world” where a COVID-19 vaccine has been created. There will still be sanitary precautions that are more in depth, but not necessarily to the extent that we are required to go through now.

Exercise Science & Coaching: NCAA Division II Head Strength Coach

You are the head strength coach for a NCAA Division II College.  Use the NCAA website to view your school choices – choose an actual school.  Each spring you present the up coming summer and next year’s plan of action for the strength and conditioning department.  Within this presentation you will provide the athletic department and individual coaches with the University’s academic objectives, your personal coaching philosophy, athletic department philosophy, job descriptions of current staff, and a year round weight room schedule for all sports at your college.  Present these components along with athlete weight room guidelines and strength and conditioning staff schedule for Athletic Director approval.  Prior to this meeting you have had one on one conversations with each coach and coaching staff.  These meetings lined out the goals and objectives for each team, based on last season results and in coming athletes.  You will discuss these meetings in your presentation for your chosen 4 sports.  You will  develop strength and conditioning programs for a total of 4 sports at your University/College, 2 major men’s sports and 2 major female sports.  You may only choose one gender for a particular sport.  For example you may not choose, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s volleyball, etc. Baseball and softball are considered similar in training and both sports cannot be used.  The strength and conditioning program must provide clear team and individual position objectives.  The strength and conditioning program must include a summer program and an in season program.  No additional offseason program is necessary.  Remember for the summer program, consider the athletes who do not have access to weight room equipment during the summer or are injured and insure modifications are present. Strength and conditioning programs must abide by the current ACSM resistance training guidelines and industry protocol for training for each chosen sport.  Each team’s program must be able to be presented and accessible to players and coaches at the above mentioned yearly spring meeting after all post conference play is complete. *This Scenario is in a “world” where a COVID-19 vaccine has been created. There will still be sanitary precautions that are more in depth, but not necessarily to the extent that we are required to go through now.

Fitness and Wellness Professional Studies
You have been hired by a small rural community, or in an urban neighborhood. You will be working with this specific community’s Department of Social Services, Local Recreation Department, Community YMCA, or other Private Organization. Your job is to implement Healthy People 2030 Health Objectives by choosing 4 of the topic areas that will allow you to implement and create 4 fitness and wellness programs.  These topic areas should be specific to the fitness and wellness needs of your chosen community/neighborhood.  Your 4 programs are actual programs, classes, seminars, community events, etc, and must be able to showcase how your chosen HP2030 objectives are being met.  Ideas for programs can be found in the HP2030 website.

Using the Wellness Continuum’s six dimensions of wellness (Fahey, Insel, & Roth, 2013), and the Process of Change Model (Prochaska, DiClemente, & Norcross, 1992) develop specific strategies for improving overall fitness and wellness in your specific community through your designed programs. You have a budget that you must create and adhere to.  Budgets must start off small, and include your salary.  The only requirement for additional funding is that you be able to show improvements in the population’s overall health as a direct result of your programs, strategies, and actions.  Use the HP2030 to gather assessment ideas. You will present your proposed plan to your boss.  You are seeking program approval and future funding.  *This Scenario is in a “world” where a COVID-19 vaccine has been created. There will still be sanitary precautions that are more in depth, but not necessarily to the extent that we are required to go through now.

Requirements For Capstone Project Submission

Capstone Project: Preliminary Outline: Due Week 2

For your first Capstone Project assignment you are to review the appropriate scenario for your concentration and begin collecting data on a specific topic for the project.  A preliminary outline of your Capstone Project topic is due by the end of week 2.

For the week 2 assignment, it is absolutely essential that you read, study, and become familiar with the process and requirements of the Capstone Project BEFORE you begin your outline. Give yourself enough time to write the path and establish initial resources for your scenario. It is important that you read and reflect on the content and do not rush through it.

Additional hints for successful organization of your Capstone Project…

  • Identify the scenario (capstone scenario) – this is pretend. You are pretending you have this job and need to explain your project to your boss. You and your boss will present this project once you complete it. (we are pretending, use your imagination).
  • Review and prioritize the information
  • Select specific information from the scenario and categorize it according to people, place, program, order of events, etc.
  • Proofread your work

For week 2’s assignment submit your formal Capstone Project Topic along with a preliminary outline of your presentation.

This should include:

  1. Title Page
  2. Table of Contents (place holder at this time)
  • Basic structure content outline
  1. Reference Page:

*Sources must be submitted in proper APA formatted style. (A variety of sources are required and 5-10 sources max at this time)

*Reference section should consist of brief 2-5-sentence description of source and why it is necessary to your case study.

Save your Document as YOURNAME_SPHE490_CP_Topic_Outline.doc

NOTE:  Your Capstone Project is a work in progress.  Your sources will change and evolve throughout the process of completion.  This is not a “set in stone” outline.  It can change.  Instructor feed back will focus on the necessity of your outline topics, quality of topic, as well as the sources you have chosen.

Your completed Capstone Project will be approximately 20 – 40 pages long with a total of 15 -25 references. Don’t panic, this includes photos, charts, bullet points, descriptive text, etc.

Capstone Project Q&A and Help & Resources Discussion Weeks 5 & 7

In the Discussion section of the classroom a discussion board titled “Capstone Project Q&A and Help & Resources” is open.  This forum board will count toward your final grade.  Each week you will have the opportunity to discuss your progress with your classmates.  In weeks 5 & 7 you are required to post a minimum of two posts each week, the posts can be questions or responses.  I will not require a word count. However, quality of comments will be assessed.  Use this space to discuss your chosen scenarios for your capstone project, web sites and resources that offer great tools for developing material and gathering information.  General comments and assistance from your professor are located in this forum.  Be sure to read all posts and visit it frequently throughout your Capstone Project design.

Continue to research and compile your sources and develop your outline for your capstone project.  Message me with questions or concerns and use the Capstone Project Week 5 & 7 Discussion board for assistance.

Initial Capstone Project Submission (Day 5, Week 7)

The Initial Capstone Project Submission (Week 7) is a complete and finished submission.  All supplementary documents (tables, charts, PDFs, etc.) must be present and accounted for in the table of contents. They can be submitted as separate documents for ease of layout.  Documents must be labeled with your name and the appropriate title.  The initial submission is for Boss (instructor) review and feedback and allows you the time to make assigned adjustments to your project before Final Capstone Project Submission (Week 8).  Initial Capstone Project Submission is due, for grading, by Day 5 (Friday) of week 7.  This early submission is vital for instructor feedback and your time to make assigned adjustments to your project.  If you cannot meet this deadline, contact your Boss (instructor) for an extension.

Again, Friday submission provides your instructor with the opportunity to offer initial feedback on your Capstone Project.  Instructor feedback will allow you to make assigned final adjustments on your project in order to develop a solid Final Capstone Project Submission, reflective of your learning at AMU/APUS.

Save your Document as YOURNAME_SPHE490_CP_Final_Draft_Initial_Submission.docx

Final Capstone Project Submission (Day 7 Week 8)

Your Final Capstone Project Submission is due Day 7 (Sunday) of Week 8.  Ensure all assigned adjustments have been made and are clearly labeled in the text area of the week 8 assignment area, and all submitted documents are clear and well titled.  NO FINAL CAPSTONE PROJECT WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT INITIAL CAPSTONE PROJECT SUBMISSION AND/OR PRIOR TO INSTRUCTOR REVIEW AND FEEDBACK.  Again, No final capstone project submission will be accepted without initial capstone project submission and/or prior to instructor review and feedback.  And just in case you missed that… NO FINAL CAPSTONE PROJECT WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT INITIAL CAPSTONE PROJECT SUBMISSION AND/OR PRIOR TO INSTRUCTOR REVIEW AND FEEDBACK.

You will be given detailed individual instructions for submission of your Week 8 assignment in your Week 7 feedback.

Save your Document as YOURNAME_SPHE490_CP_Final_Submission.docx

Background Information

Introduction about the gym

Currently, the Fantastic Gym Club features a consistent membership base of 1,000 members. It has been in operation for the past three years. The focus was on its membership offering where clients are allowed to access all the Group Fitness Classes. So far, no personal training has been offered for the members. The gym has experienced significant growth and attention over the past year. That is due to the friendly prices offered with no limitations to what the clients can do once inside the facility. Hence, it is perceived as a very flexible entity by clients, who have then referred their friends and family to try out the services.

Management

Currently, the gym is managed by the owner who was also a trainer when it was first opened. My. Glen Jackson is the CEO and founder of Fantastic Gym Club. However, as more clients subscribed to its membership, there was a need to employ more members within the management team (“Growth Curve,” 2017). The gym has an accounts manager who ensures that the records are up to date. A human resources manager is also present to ensure that all the gym employees are acting as expected, and that their performance is up to par. A sales and marketing manager is also present. He is responsible for the marketing activities of the company.

Services

The gym offers various services including group fitness classes. During this class, the trainer on duty engages the clients present in a workout session that lasts one hour. It is scheduled for early morning and evening to ensure that all clients are accounted for. Those who will not be able to join the morning class can always attend the evening workout session. Also there is the availability of treadmills, weight and other equipment which individuals can use as they please. The clients are also entitled to consultations with the trainers, with regards to their diet. Depending on an individual’s characteristic, the trainer will design a specific diet plan that will complete exercise and lead to an overall healthy body.

Other Information about the gym

The gym is located in Seattle, Washington State. The building has two floors; where the ground floor is where all gym equipment are installed. The upper floor has been set aside for group classes. Hence, there is a lot of unused space on the upper floor. There is a shower which clients can opt to use, instead of going back home to freshen up. Also, lockers are available where clients are allowed to book one for their storage.

The performance curve of the gym has flattened over the past months. The management fears that the gym is losing its competitiveness to new facilities being established in the area. For the past two months, no new clients have been registered. However, the gym has not lost many of its loyal customers. The management decided that it is best to reconsider its services, with the hope that more clients will finally feel enticed to join the team (“Growth Curve,” 2017).

The introduction of a for-profit personal training program is expected to trigger more revenue for the gym owner since the facility will have diversified its product offering, thereby attracting a new customer base.

Gym Details

Membership and members

Fantastic Gym Club offers two types of memberships; The Gold Card membership and classic membership. In the Gold Card membership,           the clients get to enjoy a series of benefits. There is an unlimited access to the Fantastic Gym Club. This means that the clients will be able to head into the gym at any time they want between 5.00 am and 11.00 pm. They have access to free fitness training sessions that will be headed by the trainer on duty. Free Wi-Fi is also present so that clients can be able to catch up on emails or other online activities after the session is over. There is also the option of bringing a guest at any time or session. Therefore, the subscribed individual will be able to bring a partner at no extra cost.

Tanning and HydroMassage are also a part of the benefits of this Gold Card membership. Massage chairs are also present at the 1st floor so that the people can get free massage when needed. However, since only a limited number of chairs exist, the people have to take turns. Other benefits include discounts offered. For instance, there is a discount of 50% on drinks at the facility, who are in this membership. Also, the people can get a 20% off on specific products from Reebok.com.

The classic membership features limited benefits, including an unlimited access to the Fantastic Gym Club, free fitness training, and free Wi-Fi. This option is obviously cheaper than the first option. However, it is an important consideration for people who are in need of a more affordable option (Greeley, 2016). The members will only get the basic workout sessions, but will not access all other luxurious services such as tanning and massages.

The gym currently hosts at least 1,000 members. It features both male and female members. In addition, the memberships have ensured that the gym has members from different social classes. The members are important individuals who ensure that the gym earns enough revenue. Hence, it is important to always consider their needs and implement them to ensure customer satisfaction.

Services

Considering the benefits available under each membership, it is evident that this gym offers a series of services. First, the main service is the group fitness classes. Individuals who are present at the set time, either morning or evening, will be engaged in a mass workout session by the qualified trainers. Second, there is also the option of individual work out during other hours of the day. Here, the individual will get to focus on activities of choice. Third, the gym offers a service where individuals can get diet advice from the trainers. They will be informed on what to consume, and at which times of the day. Fourth Tanning and Massages are also services offered in the gym. Individuals interested in these options will have to be subscribed in the Gold Card Membership.

Equipment

The gym has various equipment which clients can use. They include treadmills, exercise cycles, elliptical, rowing machines, stair climbers, free weights, racks, kettlebells, and many others.

Rooms (Weight Room/Cardio Room)

The gym features two rooms where one is for weights and the other is for cardio exercises. This segregation is important sine it ensures that individuals handling similar activities are located in one area. Therefore, they can also choose to learn from one another.

Mission Statement

Mission Statement

The personal training program is committed to the development of personalized fitness programs that are especially designed to motivate the clients and offer them support (Davies & Danaher, 2017). It aims to elevate the clients to a desired level of strength, flexibility and performance (Greeley, 2016). All these benefits are offered in one friendly environment, our Fantastic Gym Club.

What the gym is about

Our gym is all about helping clients to attain the healthy bodies that they desire. For some, their main aim is to lose weight, while for others, it is to build muscle. The focus of a workout session can be any body part. Our gym offers the kind of services that will ensure that clients are able to achieve their goals, and find a sense of satisfaction in the process (Greeley, 2016). The main goal is to offer satisfactory services to our clients.

What they can expect

Clients can expect to find supportive trainers and an understanding management team. The gym is always willing to make changes that will promote customer satisfaction. Hence, any suggestions given will be received with great enthusiasm as it will help the gym to perform better in future (Greeley, 2016). The trainers are strict but friendly. Thus, the clients should expect to find a team that will ensure the workout sessions are taken seriously. In case a client misses out on a series of sessions, the gym personnel will make phone calls to follow up on the reason behind their absence. At the end of every month, the most committed client will be recognized and awarded a certain discount on the next payment. This approach is supposed to keep the clients motivated, and make the workout sessions exciting (Acquaviva, 2004). We create a small community where people get to make new friends while working out.

Purpose

Despite the client’s current fitness level, the resulting training program will be designed to effectively meet their needs. At Fantastic Gym Club, we understand that some clients are beginners, while others are in their advanced levels. That is why the personal training program has been introduced to ensure that individual goals, injuries, diseases or disorders are accounted for (Greeley, 2016). Some clients may not be able to engage in specific activities, while others will require a focus on certain workouts to help with recovery. Thus, the purpose of the personal training is to ensure that fitness is fun and safe for all clients (National Academy of Sports Medicine, 2018). The fitness trainer will help to keep the clients focused on their goals, and to design a suitable routine outside training sessions for the best results.

Hiring Process

The need for the position

The gym needs personal trainers who will help in the implementation of the new personal training program. Considering the fact that the gym has a large client base of 1,000 individuals, it is imperative that there are enough personal trainers to handle their unique needs (Heathfield, 2021). That is because each personal trainer an only handle a specific number of clients if at all the best results are to be attained. Through the introduction of the personal training program, the gym should be fully equipped with enough resources to cater to the needs of clients who will enroll to it. It is expected that at least a quarter of the current client base will be interested in this program. Hence, the gym requires around 10 new recruits to work as full time personal trainers, and 5 who will work as part time trainers. The part time trainers will work as a backup in case the clients who sign up increase.

Planning

The recruitment process needs to be based on the program goals. It is important to plan effectively since it will not only ensure that the right individuals are hired, but also to avoid the costs of any bad recruitment decisions (Greeley, 2016). Hence, it is important to determine whether the recruitment is aimed at business expansion or change. In this case, the gym is expanding to also include the personal training program which was previously unavailable. Hence, the personal trainer needs to have specific skills such as Physical Assessment, affective exercises, CPR, First-Aid training, record keeping, and even nutrition knowledge (National Academy of Sports Medicine, 2018). Interpersonal and leadership skills are also important especially since the recruit will act as a coach. Another important goal is to ensure that the best individual is recruited. They will create a difference in terms of the quality of service offered to the customers.

The job description needs to be formulated since it is a new position. For the personal trainer job description, the recruit is expected to access the client’s strength and weaknesses before using the information to customize a workout plan (Heathfield, 2021). He or she will be responsible for offering physical and mental guidance to the clients, as well as regularly monitor their progress (Greeley, 2016). The appropriate exercise activities should be assigned to ensure that the clients are not injured in the process. Research into new exercise techniques and trends is also a must as it ensures that the gym will be offering an updated fitness training service. A positive and trusting relationship must also be established with customers to ensure that they are always comfortable and free to share their concerns.

The requirements for qualification include past experience as a personal trainer, knowledge of fitness programs, the ability to motivate and offer guidance to clients, able to work during flexible hours, possess excellent communication skills, and have a CPR and First Aid certificate, and a degree in Kinesiology or any equivalent option.

Advertising for the Vacancy

The job advertisement will be placed in the newspaper, billboards, as well as various social media platforms (Heathfield, 2021). The reason why these options have been chosen is that many people focus on these platforms for information exchange. Therefore, the opportunity of attracting the right people from the public, to apply for the position, has increased significantly. Social media platforms are also highly effective since posts can be shared, thereby spreading the news faster and wider (Zimny, 2019). The deadline for the application will be set for two weeks to enable the applicants to send their resumes. After the deadline, the advertisements will be pulled down. The interview date for those shortlisted will be set for 1 week after the application deadline.

Review of Applicants

Before conducting the face to face interview, it is important to ensure that the right people are shortlisted. It helps the institution to avoid waste of time and resources by interviewing individuals who do not have the required qualification (Heathfield, 2021). Thus, all applications will be reviewed where those who do not meet the education and professional requirements will be set aside. Afterwards, those who meet the qualifications will be shortlisted and contacted.

Background Checks

The role of the personal trainer is very important because it features a close relationship with clients. The relationship between the coach and the client needs to be maintained as professional, and to be respectful always to avoid any legal action against the gym in terms of harassment (Greeley, 2016). Hence, the recruits should be respectful people who know how to maintain boundaries, even as they work on developing a personal relationship with clients (Shestakova, 2017). Through background checks, all those with criminal records will be considered unsuitable for this role. This will be enough to disqualify them from the process.

Interviewing

Interviewing personal fitness trainers will take place face to face. The questions asked will want to verify details included in their resumes, as well as check their overall understanding of the personal fitness trainer role (Heathfield, 2021). Hence, those who will know what they will offer to the gym, and why they feel their skill is unique, will be considered. Others who seem to have faked their skills in the resume, or those whose skills are outdated will be eliminated.

Training of new staff members.

The new recruits must be trained effectively before they can start offering their services to the clients (Shestakova, 2017). That is because at Fantastic Gym Club, we value high quality services that guarantee customer satisfaction. Hence, even if the resume and interview show that the personal trainers have considerable skill and knowledge in the field of training, additional training will be offered during the first week of employment.

The training will be all rounded, meaning that the process will not focus only on personal fitness training, but also the goals of the organization as a whole (Greeley, 2016). The trainers need to be conversant with what the gym aims to achieve in terms of financial returns, growth, and even public image among others. Hence, they will get training on how to act and treat clients, how to plan for sessions and ensure they are in line with the gym’s policy, and many other factors.

Payroll

How much is going where

Once the personal trainers have been hired, they need to understand how payment will be made. First, they are not considered as independent trainers since they are working as employees for the gym. Also, the gym is responsible for attracting the clients through its sales and marketing techniques. Hence, even when the trainer has not had any clients, the gym will still be responsible for paying a minimum wage (Dale, 2021). The same cannot be said for independent trainers who are not technically hired by the gym. In addition to the minimum wage, the trainer gets 20 % commission on all personal training package sales that have been paid up front. This is a considerable amount considering how the trainer will only need to train clients brought to him (Stanforth & Weidenheft, 2019). Also, no other administrative activities will be engaged in. Since the personal trainer will also be handling some group training activities, a 10% commission will also be charged for all the group training package sales that have been made. Lastly, a 5% bonus commission will be offered to the overall salary whenever the trainer completes 60 training sessions within the pay period.

In-house vs Outsourcing

There is always an option of outsourcing the personal training services to independent trainers. In such a case, the trainers own their own companies, but will be hiring the gym as grounds for delivering the services. This option means that the trainer will have to look for their own clients, rather than rely on the gym. The relationship is also on a contractual basis, and not permanent. Hence, the trainer may decide to use another gym whenever he or she pleases. Unfortunately, this option is not the most favorable one since the gym will be earning less revenue, as compared to when the trainer is in-house (Greeley, 2016). An in-house trainer is an employee of the gym who is entitled to a given percentage of the sales as salary (Dale, 2021). This option ensures that the gym has control over its clients and performance of the trainers. That is why the personal training role will not be outsources. Rather, the gym will hire full time employees. This option will enable the gym to earn maximum revenue.

Daily Schedules of Trainers

Personalized Services for members

4.30 am – 5.00 am: Wake up Time

This is an option factor sine some people prefer to have early mornings, while others do not. However, personal trainers need to be early risers since most of the clients in search of personal trainers are those who are committed to early mornings (Davies & Danaher, 2017). Hence, the trainer needs to be available to offer the services. Additionally, the most dedicated clients are those who will listen to the advice given to them by their trainers as it will help them in getting the best results. Therefore, if the trainer advices on early mornings, then the clients should do the same.

When the trainer wakes up, this time is often important for having the pre-workout routine. It features a reflection on past sessions and even going through messages for last-minute schedule changes from clients. The days plan should then be updated. Clients should understand the importance of confirming appointments at least 24 hours before time. It should be included in the company policy that cancelling too close to the session when there is no real emergency attracts a fine. Therefore, communication ahead of time is key. When a session is cancelled, the time can be used to add in another client, or even train group sessions.

6.00 – 9.30 am: Morning Workouts

This is the time when morning clients come in for their personal sessions and when group workouts are held. Aside from working with individual clients, the personal trainer will also be expected to handle group workouts. This is important because group workouts also enhance the revenue for the gym. It is often a form of marketing technique for the personal training services.

9.30 – 10.30 am: Workout Time

The personal trainers still need to set aside time for their own workouts (Arena et al., 2018). The easiest time to do this is in the mid-morning since the traffic to the gym slow down a bit. Most clients will have done their routines already and headed off to work. Therefore, after morning sessions are done, the trainer should use the free time for their personal workout sessions.

10.30 am – 11.30 am: Break

Just as is the case with every other profession, the personal trainer will also need to have a break. During this time, he or she can take the time to freshen up and have a post-workout meal. This is the time when social media posts can also be uploaded to help the gym attract more clients (Zimny, 2019). Emails and messages can be read and responded to while resting and preparing for the next session.

11.30 am -1.30 pm: Work Session

This time is often characterized by a mixture of consultations and group workouts. New clients who want to join a gym membership will often make way to the facility at around midday. Also, many others who have just come out of work will also be coming in for group workouts.

1.30 pm – 4.30 pm: Mid-Afternoon Lull

Despite the location of the gym, many facilities experience this occurrence. It is generally the slowest time of the day. Therefore, the trainer can get another break and rush out to do some errands. It can also be used to research more and attend continuing education courses online. Also, any gym meetings and appointments with clients should be scheduled for this time.

4.30 pm – 7. 30 pm: Another Workout Session

This is another time of the day when clients come in high numbers to the facility. Hence, some personal training clients should be scheduled for this time. The clients who prefer working at this time are the younger individuals who can still be safely pushed to their limits.

7.30 pm – 9.30 pm: Closing Time

After all sessions are completed, the trainers can now sign out and head home. However, before they can do so, it is important that they first take notes and insert the right records into client files. A plan for the next day is also established and review.

Breakdown of a weekly schedule

One way to get the best outcome and maintain it is to engage in the same workout over and over again. The trainer, therefore, needs to be prepared with a weekly schedule that is suitable for such clients (Vasylenko, 2016). It should be structured in such a way that injury is reduced, but results are optimized.

Monday: Upper Body Strength Training for 45 – 60 minutes

Any weekly workout schedule should encompass a strength training exercise. Dumbbells and barbells may seem overwhelming to many clients. However, it is the key to building lean muscles, increasing bone strength, and even preventing injury. The strength routine should be changed every few weeks to ensure progress is recorded.

Tuesday: Lower-body strength training for 30 – 60 minutes

When it comes to lifting, it is recommended that one should wait at least 48 hours before working on the same group of muscles. This gives it time to recover since microscopic tears occur during the workout. That is why on day 2, it is important to focus on the lower body so that the upper body can relax.

Wednesday: Yoga or an equivalent low-impact activity for 30 – 60 minutes

Same activities should not be done on a daily basis. Hence, when high impact activities have been done for two days, the next days should feature low impact activities (Vendramin et al., 2016). It gives the body time to rejuvenate while still burning major calories.

Thursday: High-Intensity Interval Training for 20 minutes

Although these fast-paced workouts require only a short time, they still offer the same health benefits that are enjoyed from endurance exercises. Also, it is not monotonous, which is why people who engage in it are more likely to remain motivated to work out (Acquaviva, 2004). A great start is to consider activities such as running, cycling, and even dancing (Vendramin et al., 2016). These short bursts alongside low intensity work are a great start for beginners.

Friday: Total-body strength training from 30 – 60 minutes

Strength training should be designed in such a way that one aims to hit all the major muscle groups in the body. Quads, glutes, chest, hamstrings, and even the upper back and core must be considered. Hence, Deadlifts, Hip thrusts, squats, bench presses, planks, and paloff press are examples of exercises that one may consider.

Saturday: Steady-state cardio

Today, most of the attention is on HIIT workouts. However, it is important to note that steady-state cardio is also important to the overall body health. Individuals should aim to run for at least two hours every week to help extend one’s lifespan. Cardio should be done at least once a week.

Sunday: Rest Day

It is important to take day offs and rest. Sunday should be meant for reflection and planning ahead. Without rest, many clients will be unable to remain focused on their goals since workout is exhausting, just as is the case with every other activity.

Trainer Records

Explains how the trainer will record client information

When a gym has many clients, like the current 1,000 client base in Fantastic Gym Club, maintaining good client records may seem like a hectic task. However, it is still imperative that proper records are maintained in order to ensure that best services are offered to clients (Vasylenko, 2016). First, each member needs to have a file. Paper folders should be created for every one of them, where one must have workout cards, detailed notes of sessions, and even assessment forms (National Academy of Sports Medicine, 2018). A file should also be created on the computer. Therefore, there will be backups available. Information that will be recorded includes phone number, birth date, goals, medical issues, and other essential client information. For computer records, the Fitness Analyst™ software will be used.

In case the electronic access fails, the trainer can easily use the paper files to retrieve any essential client data. During personal training sessions, it is important to take note of important factors, which will then be added to the client file. The notes can be made during the session or after. Important factors to consider include how did the client feel during the session? What important points were discussed? Which exercises were used? Which new body aches or pain? Which homework activities were recommended? What goals were created for the week?

Detailed records to show progress

The detailed records which will show client progress will be done using the monthly review form. The basic form will be sent to the clients for them to fill in the open-ended questions and email them to the personal trainer (Bıyıklı, 2018). Through the detailed responses, it will be possible to keep track of the client’s progress over time. Some questions which need to be addressed include; which goals are unmet? Which areas require improvement in future? The outcome of this review will be positive since the clients will participate fully in analyzing their progress. Hence, solutions that are recommended will be helpful to them since they were involved in the process.

New Members

Introduce members to gym

A factor that will make our gym stand out from the rest is the customer service offered. When the customers are first enrolled into the gym, it is important to makes sure that they are comfortable. To do so, they need a proper introduction to the trainers. They need to know how they gym operates and what to expect from it.

Show new members around to make them feel comfortable

The new members need a quick tour of the floors and equipment available. They should be shown the restrooms, private showers, and their lockers. This is important since they need to know where to find anything that they need in the gym. Also, they should be assured of assistance from the trainers in case they need any help.

Services Offered

The new members need to be introduced to the services offered by the gym. The trainer will explain the group fitness classes, the personal fitness classes, and the tanning and massage services which are offered in the Gold Card membership. They need to understand the difference between the Gold Card membership and the classic membership.

Short- and Long-term goals

Once a new member enrolls, the trainer should conduct an assessment and help in setting short and long term goals. Of course these are subject to change after workout sessions begin. However, they are important since they help in setting a vision for the client. The short-term goals need to be set for a maximum of one week. What activities will the client engage in? How many days a week do they hope to be working out? Long term goals will be set for a month. It will include expected weight loss, changes in muscle tone and appearance, an increase in hours of exercise and so on.

Gym rules

The Fantastic Gym Club has specific rules that clients must adhere to. They are meant to ensure safety and comfortability of all clients, as well as the trainers. They are discussed below.

  1. After you are done, clean up. Any weights which were being used should be put back into place. They should be wiped clean. Mats should be folded and returned to their location.
  2. Common courtesies should be used when inside the gym. Weights should not be dropped carelessly. Individuals should wait their turn when they want to use an equipment. Any comments should be polite. The clients should treat the gym staff with respect.
  3. The workout environment should be respected. Conversations should be minimal and in low tones so that other clients are not distracted.
  4. Ensure Safety First at all times. For the safety of all individuals in the gym, it is important to handle equipment as they are supposed to. In case one is unsure of how to use the equipment, they should always ask for assistance from the trainers.

Private Personal Training Assessment Protocol

Customized services

At Fantastic Gym Club, the assessment is done in three parts for individual clients. The whole process is expected to last around 10 minutes where postural assessment, movement assessment, and flexibility assessment are conducted (National Academy of Sports Medicine, 2018).

Part 1: Postural Assessment

For this assessment, the client should remove any excessive clothing so that much of the body is exposed. It should only reveal the most appropriate parts that will enable the trainer to get a good view of how the body is aligned (Henriques, 2016). The client should be advised to breathe naturally when standing in a normal relaxed posture. The assessment will start from head to feet. Is the head titled or normal? Is the upper back kyphotic or normal? Are the shoulders dropped or elevated? Ask for permission for pelvis area assessment. Inform the clients of what the trainer is looking for. Are the hips levelled? Does the client feature an anterior tilt or posterior tilt? Are the hips wider than the knees when he is standing with feet together? Are the knees on the same height? Do they have any gross medial or lateral rotations? Do the bare feet have an excessive arch? Does the client have flat feet? Do the feet rotate when walking? Is there any other noticeable feature that was not noticed before when immobile?

Part 2: Movement Analysis

The trainer should offer a simple workout demonstration for the client to watch on each of the following exercises. While performing the reps, the trainer should focus on the client’s ability to maintain a proper form without experiencing any pain. Also, the client should be asked what he or she feels.

  • Squats- While performing squats, the trainer should check for internal hip rotation as evidenced by knee knocking, and external rotation that is evidenced by knee bowing. Is the client leaning on one side? Are the knees sliding forward?
  • Lunges-Trainer should look for hip, knee and ankle alignment, hip rotations, knee sliding forward, the heel lifting up, or any balance issues. Is there any difference on the other side?
  • Pull- Observe whether the client is able to maintain the shoulders down, or whether the shoulder blades can be retracted. Are the muscles being activated? Are both sides symmetrical?
  • Push- Using the knee-based push-up, the trainer should check for back sways, scapular stability or winging, and symmetry on both sides.
  • Core- This should be assessed when laying down on the back, on the trainer’s hand. The pressure on the trainer’s hand is key in this analysis. When lifting the legs to 90 degrees, the pressure should be maintained. Both legs should be assessed. The client should be able to maintain the pressure until the feet touch the ground.

Part 3: Flexibility Assessment
In this section, the client will either record a “good” or “need improvement (NI).” (Langton & King, 2018). The exact range of motion (ROM) is not important.

  • Medial Glute- The client should sit upright and place an ankle on the opposite knee. The shin should be parallel to the ground in good ROM. If the knee is pointed upwards, even slightly, then the ROM is limited. Is there a difference between the left and right side?
  • Hamstring- The client should lie supine on the floor before contracting the abs, fully extending the legs and then lifting it straight as high as possible. How high does the leg go before it starts to bend at the knee? How far does it go before the spine starts pressing on the floor? Ideally, this should happen at around 80 degrees.
  • Hip flexor- While still at the supine position, the client should bring one knee to the chest with the other leg laying straight on the ground. If the hip flexors are tight, then the extended leg will start bending at the knee. Also, the head may lift from the floor.
  • Pectoralis – While still laying down straight, the client should attempt to extend both arms over their head, until they reach the ground. Can the client touch the other wrist without bending the spine?
  • Teres Major – while still on the ground and elbows in position, the client should try to externally rotate the forearms so that they are facing downwards. Is the client arching his or her back? Is it an impossible task to do?
  • Quadriceps – the client should lie with arms crossed and head resting on them. One foot should be brought to the glute. Can the client bend more than 90 degrees?

Trainers will run this program with their own clients

The trainers are supposed to use the above protocol with every one of their private clients. That is because each individual features unique weak points and strengths. Therefore, it will enable the trainer to keep proper records and develop a suitable workout routine for every client.

Charges for personal trainer

At Fantastic Gym Club, the personal trainer session will be charged based on the time per session. A client can choose to have a 30 minute session, 1 hour session, or 90 minute session. For the 30 minutes session, the rate is $40. Per hour session is charged at $60. Lastly, the 90 minute session is charged at $90.

The benefits of members hiring a trainer

There are many benefits associated with hiring a personal trainer. First, with this option, all the focus is on the client. That means that the sessions will be designed based on the weak points identified during the sessions (Wayment & McDonald, 2017). Second, the trainer will be able to identify how one is performing the workout, thereby offering immediate feedback. Lastly, a close relationship is developed with the trainer, thereby leading to better client outcomes.

Expectations/Duties of personal trainers

The duties of the personal trainer are straightforward. The client can expect the trainer to access his or her strength and weaknesses before using the information to customize a workout plan. The trainer is responsible for offering physical and mental guidance to the clients, as well as regularly monitor their progress. The appropriate exercise activities should be assigned to ensure that the clients are not injured in the process.

Marketing Strategy

Services offered to target market

The services offered to the target market are quite straight forward. The personal training will ensure that individuals who need specific attention can get that at a fair price. The personal trainer will work with them to identify weak areas and suggest on the best workout plans. The trainer will be a guide and mentor in their journey so that whenever they feel like giving up, the trainer will be there to remind them of their goals. Aside from personal training sessions, the members will also enjoy other additional services such as tanning and massages, group trainings, and many others depending on the membership.

Discounts

Discounts will be offered to frequent clients, or to those who pay for a series of sessions up front. For instance, instead of making daily payments, the client should pay for personal training sessions of 3 months straight or even longer. This will make them eligible for discounts.

Advertising

The gym personal training program will be advertised on social media, newspapers and even on television. These sites have been chosen since the target market is expected to frequent the platforms. Hence, the chances of them getting the message is very high. To make social media posts, pictures and partial videos of the personal training programs will be posted (Zimny, 2019). It will give the target market a chance of seeing some of the benefits that they are missing out on. The facility will also be posted to give them a view of how the environment looks like, and how comfortable it is.

Social Media

The social media platforms that will be given a priority include, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube (Zimny, 2019). These are the most common options that target market is expected to use. They feature options of sharing posts or even tagging people, thereby helping to share the message far and wide.

Referral Program

A referral program should be considered, whereby a client can get discounts when they refer new members. It is an initiative which will promote the word of mouth marketing. Clients will want to share more with friends and family so that they can also benefit. However, the Fantastic Gym Club trainers should also be able to maintain good services since clients will not want to market poor services to others.

Use of personal training to increase earnings

Currently, the gym is only earning revenue from group workouts and other individual activities with no trainers. However, through personal trainers, the people who have no idea what is required during a workout will feel enticed to get the service. Therefore, many workout beginners are expected to sign up for memberships since they will feel more confident of great results. By focusing on per hour training, the Fantastic Gym Club will be able to record high sales than ever before.

Awareness use of apparel

The clients will be triggered to use the apparel created by the gym. The apparel will be developed and it will have the gym’s brand. Hence, the clients will be educated on how to care for the apparels in terms of cleaning and drying. This is meant to prolong the life cycle of the products, especially since they will be an integral part of marketing. By wearing the brand, more people will become aware of the gym, as well as the services it offers.

Conclusion

The Fantastic Gym Club has identified a gap in its services, which is the absence of a personal training program. Currently, the gym only earns revenue from group sessions, as well as the other individual sessions without trainers. This alone is not sufficient to promote the competitiveness of the facility. That is why the decision to introduce the personal training program has been reached. As the head personal trainer, I understand the importance of hiring the most competitive trainers. In addition, they need to be enough in number given the large client base of the facility. The trainers should not be overworked if they are supposed to offer outstanding customer services.

The trainers need to earn a sufficient amount of salary. That is why the Fantastic Gym Club offers them a basic salary even when they have not trained any individuals. In addition, whenever they train, a certain commission is earned. Clients, on the other hand, are offered various discounts to keep them motivated to pay the memberships. Using this, and other advertising strategies, the institution hopes to attract more clients to the personal training program. They will be educated of the benefits of using a personal trainer rather than focusing on group workouts. They need to understand that a personal trainer will critically assess them and identify areas of weakness. After that, a customized workout session will be developed.
