Analysis: Needs

  1. The Impact Of Physical Trauma On The Children And Family

The major short term impacts of the trauma described in the case scenario is that it has made Eloni to be removed from the home for abusing his younger brother, Kolomalu. Secondly, Eloni has been suspended from school for attempting to stab another student. The effect on the family is that the family is facing eviction and the mother, Anamalia is unable to afford food for her children. On the other hand, the long term impacts of the discussed trauma are the psychological effects on the family. For instance, Anamalia fears for fear Kolomalu’s safety when Eloni is reunited with the family. Generally, both the short term and long term effects of this trauma differ for each person. For instance, Eloni’s aggression has caused problems both in the family unit and outside of it. At the same time, Kolomalu is experiencing personal abuse while Anamalia struggles to meet the family’s basic needs. Despite the stated differences, the impacts of this trauma are equally similar because they are related to the family as a whole. Precisely, Eloni’s aggression has affected his entire family while Anamalia’s inability to provide adequate nutrition and pay rent puts the entire family’s wellbeing at risk.

  1. Needs Present Due To The Physical Trauma On The Children And Family

Mental health counseling for both children is trauma-related because the children have both been abused and the abuse of Eloni was not addressed until he began abusing his younger brother. Anamalia needs parenting classes to learn adequate parenting skills for when Eloni is able to be safely reunited with her and Kolomalu. Secondly, for the short-term trauma the family is receiving emergency assistance to buy groceries and legal assistance to avoid eviction. Eloni has been temporarily removed from the home for the safety of Kolomalu. The family is also receiving counseling services. Generally, these needs are similar because both involve the need for counseling for each family member. These needs also work together to ensure the family can be safely reunited.

  1. The Impact Of Psychological Trauma On The Children And Family

The short-term impacts of this trauma are the stresses related to lack of food, potential lack of housing, and Anamalia’s unemployment. Kolomalu and Eloni need counseling to work through their abuse. On the other hand, the long-term impact of this trauma is family as a whole must use the skills learned in counseling and through other services in order to safely live together in the future. Anamaila fears for the safety of Kolomalu up the reunification of Eloni to the family.

These impacts differ because the family’s housing and food insecurities should only last until Anamalia is able to find employment. However, substance abuse and physical abuse will be things Eloni and Kolomalu, respectively, have to learn to cope with in their day to day experiences. Similarly, these impacts are similar because each service needs to work together to reunite the family and help them succeed in the future. Food and housing security will allow the family to focus on their psychological needs in counseling.

  1. The Needs Present Due To The Psychological Trauma On The Children And Family

The family needs mental health counseling, which is trauma-related because it is the best way for each child to work through their abuse, and for Eloni to get help with his substance use. Anamalia could benefit from counseling as she may be experiencing guilt about her children’s abuse and grief from Eloni being removed from the home.

The needs for the short-term trauma are the legal and emergency assistance the family is receiving and the parenting classes Anamalia is receiving. The needs for the long-term psychological trauma are counseling for the children. Similarly, the psychological needs for the family are similar because they are services recommended by Child Protective Services. They will also work together to help the family meet their goals.

  1. The Risk And Resiliency Factors For The Children And Family

The risk factors present for the family are poor parenting skills, drug use in the household, and past abuse. Resiliency factors for the family are that Anamalia has a degree and should be able to find work soon, the family has strong ties with their community, Eloni is well-liked by peers, and Kolomalu has a close connection with his mother.

These factors relate to the specific issue in the case because it shows that the family has a chance at strengthening their resilience and reuniting safely with the right skills and coping mechanisms. They also relate because they show that the family has connections with their community which means they have a support system in place.

Similarly, these factors relate to the ages of the clients. Anamalia, who is 34, will need a support group in place as she learns parenting skills and may need help caring for her children. Kolomalu, who is 4, is at an age when it is important to have a strong connection to a caregiver as he learns about life and heals from his abuse. Eloni, who is 13, is at an age when it is important to have friends and make connections with peers as they may have a strong influence on his ability to control his aggression.

Milestone Two: Proposed Interventions

A: Legal Standards

The legal standards applicable in this case are aimed at the safety of the people around Anamalia and her children, together with their own safety. Essentially, Eloni’s aggressive behavior is to be dealt with by making him a better person and setting him apart from his loved ones to prevent him from harming them, through foster care. Principally, the safety of people is prioritized above everything else, suspension from school assures students of their safety since Eloni can no longer harm them, counseling gives the whole family a better approach to the crisis they are facing.

B. Ethical Guidelines.

Ethical guidelines require that no harm be caused to individuals, no exploitation should be involved at all costs, confidentiality should be protected, consent should be acquired before some actions are taken, and justice and social equity should also be upheld at all times. Harm has been prevented in the interventions with Eloni being placed in foster care after causing physical abuse to his younger brother. Protection of confidentiality is applied with the counseling process whereby it has been made personal without the involvement of inappropriate parties. The interventions addressed in this case are in line with ethical guidelines and the wee-being of the people involved has been considered.

C. The Degree To Which Primary Intervention Strategies Address Crises

Primary interventions handle crises through preventing their initial occurrence, in doing so, many negative outcomes are prevented. The family benefits since they are saved from dealing with the consequences of the actions that would have occurred, Eloni would probably have harmed his schoolmates and many costs would have been incurred following his actions. This is all prevented through him being suspended from school. Students are then assured of their safety.

D. The Degree To Which Secondary Intervention Strategies Address Crises.

Secondary intervention strategies handle crises by reducing their impact on the people involved. The family will benefit from these strategies such that the placement of Eloni in foster care will prevent him from doing any more harm to his brother. Eviction from the apartment also aims at comforting the neighbors by reducing the noise coming from the disagreements of Anamalia and her children. Moving the family to a different area by the state would be of help to them since it will benefit both their neighbors and themselves. They will also be prevented from being homeless.

E.     The Degree To Which Tertiary Intervention Strategies Address Crises

Tertiary interventions address crises through softening the impact of the crises on the individuals involved

 F. Importance Of Incorporating Primary, Secondary, And Tertiary Interventions

Primary interventions address an issue before it has occurrence hence are vital in helping to prevent incurrence of costs that would come up upon the occurrence of an incident.

Secondary interventions are important in reducing the impact of an action.

Tertiary interventions soften the impact of an action.

These interventions are all related in that they all aim at the good of individuals who are either directly or indirectly affected by an action.

Milestone Three: Client Needs- Care Plan

Client/Family Name: Anamalia, Eloni, Kolomalu

Human Services Practitioner Name:

Needs

A.     The Extent To Which The Plan Addresses The Children’s Need

Yes, the plan addresses the kids’ needs because it tackles the risk factors of poor parenting skills, drug abuse in the house, and past abuse through mental health counseling.  The interventions and referrals address the needs through mental health therapy for the family, emergency help in buying groceries, and legal assistance to prevent eviction. The acute needs are counseling and safety for Kolomalu and Eloni, and the ongoing needs comprise shelter since Anamalia is facing eviction.

B.     Gaps In Service Of The Plan

The gaps in the intervention that does not tackle the kids needs include:

i.                    Job placement for Anamalia to enable her to provide food and shelter

ii.                  The services provided do to customize the counseling therapy to Eloni and Kolomalu’s psychological trauma and is not appropriate for their age bracket.

My recommendations to address these needs include;

i.                    Anamalia seeks homeless shelter services from the department of homeless services (DHS) as she will get temporary housing support as she recollects her life.

ii.                  The DHS can also link Anamalia and her children to shelter services such as Catholic Charities, YWCA, Volunteers of America, where she and her kids can access various services such as counseling, food, housing, homeless resources, and integrated case management.

iii.                Eloni and Kolomalu should be linked to a behavioral therapist and given counseling services tailored to their age and psychological trauma (Hanson & Lang, 2016).

c. The Degree To Which The Plan Addresses The Family’s Needs

The family’s immediate needs, such as eviction and food regularly, are not addressed by the current plan. The family got a referral to apt agencies to assist with mental health needs and housing needs. Likewise, Anamalia got a referral to assist her in getting a job. Whereas the plan does not give immediate relief for the family’s basic needs, it does offer the resource essential in meeting the family’s ongoing needs. By participating in the intervention made, the family will learn coping and resiliency aptitudes and re-build their lives to a better future (Boles, 2017).

D.     The Gaps In Service Of The Plan

The plan’s intervention gaps do not tackle the family’s immediate needs: homelessness because of eviction, Eloni’s suspension from school, and Anamalia’s challenges of providing nutritious food for her kids. Whereas there is no immediate service to assist the family, there are likely resources such as shelter services that families can access to ease their situation. Essentially, the suggestions for these unmet needs are for Anamalia to seek DHS services to link her to shelter services with diverse programs to serve her family’s immediate needs.

E.     The Effectiveness of the Contingency Plan.

The contingency plan in place is mental health counseling for the family and parenting skills training for Anamalia. The contingency plan addresses the family’s risk factors of poor parenting skills, drug and past abuse through mental health counseling, and Anamalia learning parenting skills from her support group. The contingency plan tackles Anamalia’s resiliency factor of having a degree through makes it easy for her to get a job from the referral. The kids and Anamalia have a strong connection with the community, which implies they have a robust support system that makes it easy for them to get referrals to shelter services or help.
