Answer
Responsibilities that come with Digital Media over Previous Communication Technologies
Digitalized contents that can be transmitted over the internet and computer networks – digital media – are the current ways of passing information across the world. This communication form has outweighed previous communication technologies such as televisions, radios, printed books, and newspapers, including hand-written notes and letters. Therefore, considering digital media’s nature, it is agreeable that it requires more responsibilities than previous communication technologies.
Unlike previous communication technologies where information given to people is verified, information posted on the various social media platforms is unverified, hence leaving the audience to search for their authenticities. The validity of information transmitted through previous communication technologies is guaranteed since they have journalists, writers, and editors who would go through the content to correct it before transmission. For digital media, anybody can post anything at any time, making it unclear whether the source of information is authentic or not. Therefore, it adds the audience the responsibility of researching to confirm the source. For instance, there is a lot of information being posted on my social media platform accounts like Tweeter and Facebook that are based on rumors about sensitive matters. It then forces me to do additional research for confirmation, making it an additional responsibility for digital media.
In conclusion, digital media requires more responsibilities than previous communication technologies. One of the additional burdens is leaving the audience to do extra research to confirm the source’s authenticity. It is different from previous communication technologies where information was verified by journalists and edited before transmission. Therefore, researching to validate information on digital media is an additional responsibility for the audience, which was never the case in previous communication technologies.
