Answer

Current Event: Rising Water Temperatures could endanger the Mating of many Fish Species

Rising water temperatures could endanger the mating of many fish species is the current news published in daily science by Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research. Published on 2nd July 2020. The research institute asserts that the rising temperatures is likely to force about 60 percent of species of fish from their niches to other places that may ultimately lead to their death.

It is important to note that with high temperatures in water bodies, the circulation of oxygen is reduced which makes oxygen inadequate for use by fish. On the other hand, as a result of global warming, the earth’s temperature has been increasing which ultimately raises the temperature of water bodies.  The study reveals that high temperatures affect adult fish during mating time and the embryos as well. During mating, fish produce sperm and eggs and this additional mass needs to be supplied with oxygen, which is why even at lower temperatures, their cardiovascular systems are under enormous strain. On the other hand, the embryos lack gills that can allow them to take more oxygen, hence require more oxygen in order to survive. With insufficient oxygen, both adult and embryos are likely to die. According to the article, species that would escape death would then be forced to adapt through evolution, something that may take a long time. This implies that certain species of fish that are known today may not be present in future since some of them will die while others will evolve to look different. Alternatively, the study reveals that there is a likelihood of fish migration in order to find the best habitat and niches that favor their existence.
