Answer

Family as a client versus family as a system

Family plays a significant role in nursing and hospital treatment of patients as it provides psychological and emotional support to patients undergoing treatment. Implications of family in nurse practice remain focal mainly when analyzed from the spectrums of promoting strong and healthy relationships. The family component improves perspectives of commitment, positive communication, and the ability to cope with stress and crisis in the practice of nursing. The family’s nursing conceptual framework may either be client or system-based (Tlhowe et al., 2017). Family as a client nursing intervention involves identifying that family is a critical component of a patient. It allows a nurse to focus on individual and family members in treatment interventions, underlying the direct interactions between a patient and close family members. Family as a client involves a way of working with families to increase the capacity to care for and protect their patients.

On the contrary, family as a nursing system embodies the concerns of interactions, reciprocity, and relationships between the illness, family, patients, and larger systems within which they live.  Nursing perspectives constructed on the family as a system aim to promote healing and health on an expanded scope. Although changes in the extrinsic environment remain common, some traditional family functions are vibrant, including socialization, care, protection, emotional support, and social norms regulation. The performance of these conventional functions is significant and relevant in that they contribute to families’ overall progression (Williams et al., 2016). Such functions, such as care, social support, and protection, improve family members’ health.

The changes in family landscapes significantly influence nursing practice, and American society provides a perfect example of how the traditional practice of nurses has changed due to the dynamics of the family. Traditionally, women were caretakers, and nurse roles entailed providing support to them in-home care. Nurses would only offer services as extensions of women’s functions in homes, but current spectrums that involve women’s empowerment have expanded the scope of nursing in-home care. It has triggered extensive training programs and diversification of roles at community levels (Angier, 2013).
