Answer

Unraveling Digital Media

The beginning of this century was marked with quite the saying, ‘with great power comes great responsibility.’ But is this really the case with information? Should we be more responsible and scrutinous of how information is handled and circled in this age and day of digital media? This paper seeks to critically assess whether digital media requires us to exercise more responsibility than previous communication technology as I give examples from my own life experience.

Digital media has completely revolutionized how information is made, dispatched, and processed by its audience. It has made accessibility to a wide range of target possible. However, this equates to more of a flaw than it does strength. Due to its huge target, digital media can be used to pass inappropriate and ill-suited information. Even more so, the internet has made it possible to access illegal goods and services. For instance, I recently discovered (from a YouTube video) that a huge majority of the internet is made up of the ‘dark web,’ which allows access to illegal services such as selling of drugs and unlicensed weaponry. This insinuates that digital media requires more responsibility and control.

Additionally, digital media has proven to be very addictive – especially in this social media era. Many individuals, including me, spend most of their time viewing content that would otherwise not have been available in the previous technologies. From porn sites to illegal download of copyrighted content, digital media has made it possible to access addictive content that can be difficult to control. Therefore, it warrants more responsibility than the previously controlled technologies.

In conclusion, it is evident that greater power necessitates greater responsibility. This paper has critically assessed the reasons as to why digital media warrants more responsibility than its predecessor. As has been illustrated, digital media can be used to pass inappropriate and illegal content while it remains addictive. For these and many more reasons, it imposes more responsibility from its users at large.
