The ongoing spread of the Covid-19 pandemic around the world has led to the increased concern over safety where the general public, healthcare workers, and sick patients have been advised to wear protective facemasks and respirators to help curb the spread of the virus. However, the public argues that sick patients affected by the Coronavirus should wear the facemasks. A study was conducted to show the use of facemasks amongst people in the community through randomized controlled trials. The study results show that the use of facemasks and respirators by people in the community and healthcare workers assisted in preventing the spread of the Coronavirus from sick patients to other people in society.

Infection Spread Management

Healthcare workers should administer optimal patient care aiming towards optimal patient-centered care. The endeavor to do so comes with an awareness of public safety in reducing the spread of infections from sick patients to other community members. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has led to the realization that it is no longer the initiative of healthcare workers to limit the spread of the virus-causing infection, but it is also a moral obligation to the public to address the issue by keeping safe themselves. Therefore, a need to wear facemasks and respirators does not fall to the sick people only, but it is the public and healthcare workers’ responsibility to safeguard and preserve the health of the community through the improvement of healthcare practices like the wearing of facemasks and respirators.

Interaction between healthcare workers exposed to sick patients of Covid-19 with members of the community might lead up to the continued spread of the virus, leading to a rise in infections amongst people in society. To the public, wearing facemasks might seem to be a nuisance that limits their expressions, face-to-face talks, or inhibit their free breathing. The reason behind this trail of thought is because the designing concepts around the protective facemasks, either the surgical masks or the N95 masks and respirators, lead up to a constricted flow of air that may seem a problem to people who are not used to them. However, MacIntyre and Chughtai (2020) argue that wearing a facemask helps curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus, like the virus, like most respiratory viruses, spread through air droplets inhaled from one person to another. Therefore, through randomized clinical trials, MacIntyre and Chughtai (2020) show how important facemasks are in preserving public health by members of the community wearing them.

The results of the study confirm the importance of wearing facemasks by the community in preserving community health. MacIntyre and Chughtai (2020) state that when members of society wear facemasks in high transmission areas like colleges, universities, workplaces, and other crowded public places, the transmission of the virus is limited and prevented. Combined with other processes of improving public health like hand hygiene, members of society are guaranteed to live and interact freely to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus (MacIntyre & Chughtai, 2020). Therefore, wearing facemasks amongst members of the community is important in curbing the spread of Covid-19. The randomized controlled trials show that people’s interactions are never-ending, especially in crowded public spaces; therefore, wearing protective facemasks ensures that the Coronavirus does not spread, community health is improved, and infections and deaths from the virus infection are reduced. Conclusively, wearing facemasks by members of society, healthcare workers, and sick patients improved overall health and reduced the spread of infection.
