  1. Based on the readings, in-class discussions, and your outline, write essay #1, an explanatory synthesis essay on the effects of social media. Remember the following:

use one of the prompts we created in class
provide a clear and detailed discussion on the topic you’ve chosen
    use quotes sparingly
do not use more than three articles for quotations to support your discussion
    use the third person
include a correct Works Cited page (needs to be a separate page)
    use Word format
The essay should be about 2 pages long, not including the Works Cited page.

DO NOT need to add the works cited, I’ll take care of that.

I had a hard time to upload the files. Here are the readings needed for the essay.

Effects of Social Media

Social media has created keyboard worriers. Individuals can freely express their ideas and thoughts without remorse as long as the audience cannot see them physically. However, social media has killed both personal and interactive relationships. This paper seeks to explore the effects of social media on participants.

According to Sherry, social media is an effective communication tool. Sites such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and LinkedIn among others assist in the exchange of information from one individual to another., Besides, these sites and twitter help members to share their thoughts on numerous contemporary issues affecting the world today. Social media sites have also created strong online relationships where people interact closely and even share secrets with individuals they have met over the internet. Consequently, when social media is used constructively, it creates relationships where people can share their issues and get assistance as well as pass information from one person to another. Social media also helps in stimulating self-presentation and disclosure which are key components of boosting self-esteem. The limited auditory and visual cues enable individuals with low self-image and those with overconfidence to communicate with ease. Besides, DiSalvo states that social media site are rich in social capital which helps in boosting the self-esteem and create confident and contented individuals.

Sherry also points out that people don’t know how to manage relationships with technology. As a result, social media has compromised the quality of relationships people can engage in. For instance, interaction over the sites creates strong ties with strangers who barely know each other. This can lead to the exploitation of one unsuspecting party in the name of helping a friend. For instance, a social media friend can request for financial aid with the promise of a refund and once they receive, they block the person from accessing their wall. Social media relationships have also replaced physical relationships. People would rather chat online that meet up for coffee and have some time together. Besides, people chat with friends online even when they are on physical engagements such as dates, meetings, classroom, or even workplaces. As a result, their attention is diverted and productivity compromised.

According to DiSalvo, social media has created a breed of lonely individuals. “People can easily connect a friend through phone, but it’s not a real connection”. When people prefer to text or call everyone including their close family and intimate friends, they lack the physical encounter. Physical touch is often crucial for close relationships for affirmation and a sense of togetherness. However, when it is replaced with online communication, the individuals slowly drift apart. Besides, a person can have millions of friends on social media but be lonely in real life. This implies that whenever they log out and comes back to their real world, they are alone with no one to talk to. The implication is that individuals may sink into depression and other mental disabilities.

DiSalvo also states that some people also overdo social media while others get addicted. The addiction creates an unhealthy attachment to the sites. Consequently, people spend most of their time on social networks while compromising their real-life activities. For instance, with internet availability in places of work, schools, and even homes, people are free to engage socially anywhere. As a result, companies incur losses, homes remain unattended to, and students perform dismally.

In conclusion, social media has both positive and negative effects on the manner in which people live. When well utilized, social media is a powerful communication and interaction platform. However, when it is not managed effectively, it can affect both the mental and physical health of its participants.
