Writing Prompt:

Choose one of the following:Pollution-  This is one of the biggest problems that we are confronting in the modern era. The cars, the new technology, the factories and the chemicals that are being introduced in our food; all these elements cause terrible damage to our planet and we can see how our natural resources are decreasing day by day. Analyze the topic of pollution and offer some real solutions to some of the problems.Global warming-  Research and discuss what the major consequences of global warming are. There are many countries where the change of climate has already affected animal populations and the diminishing of natural resources. Still the topic of global warming is controversial. Some people do not believe that global warming is caused by humans. Research and identify both sides of the argument, and provide your own conclusions.Overpopulation-  Overpopulation of planet Earth is real. This not only leads to excessive pollution, but also to the degradation of the soil and the decreasing of the natural resources. Scientists came up with some ideas to control the overpopulation and to develop some renewable resources or alternative types of energy. Research this topic more and see what specific ideas scientists are working on to address this growing concern.Endangered species-  Today, no less than 3,079 species of animals are endangered due to excessive hunting, the illegal traffic of skin and animal products in some parts of the world or because of climate change. Many countries are making active efforts to try to stop this phenomena. They are not only trying to stimulate the reproduction of the few animals that still survive, but they are creating natural reservations where they are offering the perfect habitat for the renewal of the species. Research endangered species and report back with specific examples of how scientists and concerned people are trying to prevent more species from being added to the list.

Answer

Environmental Pollution: Problems and Solutions

Environmental pollution can be described as the introduction of harmful products into the environment. Pollution can be classified into air pollution, water pollution, and land pollution. Sources of pollutants include industries, commercial businesses, residents, transportation, and agricultural activities to name a few (Van Huong et al., 2017). When these harmful components penetrate the environment, they result in problems such as danger to health, biodiversity and are tied to climate change (Van Huong et al., 2017). These problems can be resolved through monitoring and funding of pollution control and enforcing multisectoral collaboration to steer pollution control (Johansson Seva, 2019). This paper seeks to examine the sources and types of pollution, the associated problems, and possible solutions that can be enforced to deal with the menace.

Pollution results from various activities and is grouped in terms of the aspect of the environment it affects. Human activities produce waste products in form of solid, liquid, or gas. These substances cause environmental harm by interfering with air and water purity or depositing solid wastes in landfills. This interference destabilizes the natural state of the environment making it non-conducive for other habitats such as humans, and another biodiversity (Van Huong et al., 2017). Environmental degradation resulting from pollution has interfered with human health, biodiversity life and is considered one of the factors that promote climate change. In terms of human health, environmental pollution causes physical harm in the short term which turns into neuro-affections in the long run. The most common heath implications are respiratory issues such as asthma, allergies, and nasal and eye irritations (Van Huong et al., 2017). Ingestion of pollution-related chemicals such as herbicides from crops or pollutants used in producing processed foods is also related to cancer. Biodiversity on the other hand diminishes as pollution degrades their natural habitats. Landfills have taken up spaces otherwise meant for living animals and organizes. Acid rain also interferes with the water bodies resulting in toxicity and consequent death of fish. Combustion of fossil fuels in developed countries and biomass in low developed countries is attributed to most greenhouse gas emission which contributes heavily to global warming (Van Huong et al., 2017).

The problems created by pollution can be resolved through developing effective pollution control.  According to Johansson Seva (2019), adequate funding is required to facilitate pollution control.  Pollution control can take the shape of monitoring sources of pollution to determine what is required to keep it under check. Monitoring of pollution ensures the data collected at local, national, or international levels are sufficient to measure the levels of pollution, identify associated sources, examine possible interventions, facilitate the enforcement, and track control progress. The third solution to pollution problems is the development of multi-sectorial partnerships such as private-public partnerships and inter-agency collaborations that will steer clean technology and energy source developments. The implication is that pollution is controlled at the source through an effort from all socio-economic sectors (Johansson Seva, 2019).

In conclusion, pollution is a global concern that is manifested in air, water, or land degradation from waste products derived from various socio-economic activities. Problems such as human health deterioration, biodiversity extinction/displacement, and climate change develop both as short-term and long-term effects of pollution.  This calls for pollution control through source monitoring, multi-sectorial collaborations, and funding the pollution control process. In a nutshell, pollution is causing severe damage to the earth and its habitats and humans should undertake all possible methods to control and eliminate the pollutants.
