Answer

Research Utilization and Evidence-Based Practice

Research utilization entails the identification and subsequent synthesis of multiple studies and other written materials in a common conceptual area that is mainly referred to as a research base. In addition, the process involves the transformation of the knowledge that has been derived from the research base into a solution to existing research (Grove, Burns, & Gray, 2013). In health sciences, for instance, research utilization can refer to the transformation of the knowledge that is gained from multiple studies into a clinical protocol that is then changed into specific nursing innovations and actions that are then administered to the patients (Grove, Burns, & Gray, 2013). From this point of view, research utilization involves the incorporation of studies and the knowledge therein into practice following a synthesis of the knowledge provided in the research studies.

On the other hand, evidence-based practice (EBP) is the incorporation of the best research evidence with expertise and values. It is the process of the application of the empirical knowledge that is generated from the synthesis of quality study findings so as to address a specific practice problem (Grove, Burns, & Gray, 2013). From this point of view, it is different from research utilization in that it entails the application of empirical evidence in research studies in real-life situations that are practical so as to solve existing problems. In the field of health sciences, evidence-based practice entails the application of empirical findings and knowledge in solving existing clinical and medical problems that are facing patients (Grove, Burns, & Gray, 2013). On the other hand, research utilization does not apply the knowledge from research directly, but in its synthesized form while evidence-based practice entails the application of the findings directly.
