QUESTION

“Following raptors from Nepal to Nebraska: My journey in understanding raptor diet, migration and conservation around the globe”

Paper should include but not limited too:
(i) A synopsis of the project, which should include a brief, one- or two-sentence description of the project and the system being studied. If appropriate, this may be an elaboration of the title of the seminar.
(ii) Explanation of the goal of the study—what is the speaker trying to find out or accomplish?
(iii) The rationale behind the study—why is it important?
(iv) An outline of the methods used—how was the work performed?
(v) Description of the results. This should be the most important part of the report. The quality and accuracy of this description is a measure of how well you understand the seminar.
(vi) A discussion of the significance of the results, which should include some conclusions. (vii) It would be useful if you could also provide a few comments on what you think should be
the next steps in the study.
(viii) Include references if you utilize published information.

Answer

  • Following Raptors from Nepal to Nebraska: My Journey in Understanding Raptor Diet, Migration and Conservation around the Globe

The project focuses on explaining the migration, diet, and conservation activities for raptor all over the world. The objective will be achieved by observing the migration of raptors from Nepal to Nebraska.

The goal of the study is conserving by protecting raptors. Notably, more and more raptors are becoming endangered.  At the moment Buechley, Evan R., et al.  indicate that 52% of raptors are experiencing a decline in population worldwide, with 18% of the birds facing extinction (856). As such, this study aims at understanding raptors in detail to help determine and develop approaches that can be used to protect the birds.  Moreover, the focus on migratory behaviours of the birds is also aimed at understanding habitat-specific factors that may be affecting raptors, subsequently pushing them out of their natural settings into new areas.

The study is vital in helping prevent raptor extinction and declining. In this regard, after understanding factors contributing to the declining population of the flesh-eating birds, the outcomes can be used to develop policies or approaches for managing raptors. Moreover, the study is ideal in evaluating the evolution in dietary behaviours of raptors due to changes in traits of other organisms that are part of the preys’ food chain.

    Methods Utilised

The first approach is observation- will be performed by sighting the birds and then following them. In this regard, the observation will involve filming the raptors with high-resolution cameras that will make it possible to zoom in and observe finite details about the birds.

Recording- it will involve noting down behaviours of birds throughout the study period.  For instance, I will write down all the foodstuff they will eat during the period, the frequency of their consumption behaviours, and any other observable traits.

Stalking- the technique involves following birds closely while trying not to disturb them or influence their behaviours.  Stalking will be critical to the exercise as it will put me in close proximity with the raptors.

Secondary research of literature- the technique will involve reviewing the literature on the raptors. The specific focus areas will comprise evaluating the behaviours of flesh-eating birds, their migration patterns for the past two decades since raptors appear to follow a similar route unless affected by undesired external factors, and the already developed approaches for conserving raptors.

    Results

The study will determine the traits of raptors with regard to their feeding. In this regard, the outcomes will comprise the specific types of foods that raptors eat.  Ideally, I will note down their prey. Moreover, the results will indicate the changes in the consumption habits of raptors.  Another outcome to be described is the route that the raptors follow from Nepal all the way to Nebraska.  The recording of the course will indicate the stops that the birds make as well as the factors which influence their migration.

    The rationale of the Results

The outcomes will help environmentalist understand factors which are affecting raptors, especially those contributing to their declining population.  As such, proper actions which can help conserve the birds as well their preferred ecosystems.  Moreover, it will also be imperative for me in developing my career in ecology. Going forward, it will be ideal to ensure that the outcomes from the study are used to develop environmental policies that can help conserve raptors. Another recommendation will be looking at how the population of these birds can be increased especially in the United States since most unique birds species are declining.
