Growth of Participation in Sports

Sports refers to all forms of competitive physical games or activities, which through organized or casual participation aim at using, maintaining, or improving skills and physical ability while at the same time entertaining spectators and enjoyment to participants. Recently, there has been an increase in sports participation. Both professional and recreational sports activities are recording high participation numbers. Therefore, this discussion offers a description of reasons that are leading to this increased engagement in sports.

The primary reason for increased participation in sports is the success it offers, especially to professional athletes. According to Eime et al. (2015), various athletes from disadvantaged backgrounds have managed to turn around their fortunes by engaging in competitive sports. The success is attributed to the improved rewards and remunerations within the contemporary sports sector.

The growth of sports in recent times has also contributed to increased participation. According to Hulteen et al. (2017), almost all nations in the world know about many sports events and appreciate them, unlike in the past. Therefore, more people who were unaware of these sporting activities engage in them, thereby increasing the overall participation levels.

Sports are vital in bettering people’s health. For instance, the chances of acquiring diseases like diabetes, stroke, and heart attack are significantly reduced when a person engages in sports. Therefore, most people are now engaging in sports to minimize their health risks. Moreover, Church, Rumbold, and Sandars (2017) state that diseases like diabetes are on the rise, and one of the management approaches is engaging in physical activity. The concept has led to increased engagement in recreational sports. Lastly, sports have emerged as one of the most appreciated entertainment practice. Therefore, some people engage in sporting activities to derive fulfillment by entertaining others.

Sports Psychology and Media Technology

The increased participation in sports increases the need for sport psychology services, especially for professional and competitive sporting activities. Ideally, sport psychology consultation is vital in helping current and aspiring athletes achieve optimum performance (Beaumont, Maynard, & Butt, 2015). Moreover, it helps ensure that all people engaged in sports only engage in right training activities.

Media technology is vital in sports for communicating the trends, achievements, and changes in the sector. Primarily, it increases the audience of sports, thereby enhancing its popularity. Media technology is also vital for sport psychology consultant services as it ensures that critical psychological information regarding sports reaches all athletes all over the world.
