  • QUESTION

    Hazard Mitigation and Preparedness

Post your response to one of the following discussion questions for Module 11, HMP Chapter 10 and HMP 1st edition Ch13 (PDF provided). Please, copy the question you are commenting in your response. Your initial response for each selected question has to be at least 250 words. Please add a word count at the end of each response. Cite the weekly readings and other sources, if needed, to support your comment. Past and current hazard events are recommended to talk about as examples in your comments. You also have to comment on one initial response from other students.

    QUESTIONS:

Q1: What elements of your community’s risk assessment process would you choose to display on maps? Why? What are some of the sources you would use to create your maps?

Q2: What role does the risk assessment play in creating the city’s mitigation strategies? Identify the natural hazards that affect your community (Orlando); determine if any are chronic hazards. What is the most concerning in your neighborhood/house? Are there any particular group that could be particularly affected by that hazard?

Q3: What can past events tell us about the frequency and magnitude of natural hazards in one place? Searching online, try to learn a little bit about the history of Orlando regarding hazards/disasters and assess the probability (hint: you can use table 10.2 as a guide) and potential magnitude/intensity (hint: you can talk about the category of the hurricane, the magnitude of the earthquake etc.) of the following hazards: tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, excessive rainfall, and extreme cold/snowstorm.

    Rubric:

    – Response to question (up to 6 points): I will evaluate the depth of your ideas, if you cited works or sources, the use of examples, the connections you bring up, etc. Show me you really thought your answer and that you want full credit!

Answer

Hazard Mitigation and Preparedness

Q2: What role does the risk assessment play in creating the city’s mitigation strategies? Identify the natural hazards that affect your community (Orlando); determine if any are chronic hazards. What are the most concerning in your neighborhood/house? Is there any particular group that could be significantly affected by that hazard?

Risk assessment entails identifying, analyzing, and evaluating risks to determine an appropriate response to the hazard. In city mitigation strategies, risk assessment assists in awareness creation, identifying vulnerable groups, and realizing the effectiveness of a control program needed to manage the situation (Yu et al., 2018). In reviewing Orlando, natural hazards faced include cold weather, hurricanes, and tornadoes as the significant issues while floods, wildfires, and terrorism form the second category in the list. Other least faced hazards are traumatic stress, food safety, and post-disaster recovery safety.

Although several natural disasters face Florida State, Orlando City is prone to floods with about 84 counts. Next on the list is a hurricane with 23 counts as blizzard records 15 counts far above tropical storm faced about three times in the past two decades. In reviewing our neighborhood, such as North Winter Park, College Park, and East Orlando, the most chronic natural hazards are storm and earthquakes that have devastated lives in the region, leading to disruption of normal life. Reference to historical natural disaster list indicates that cold weather has been the most prolonged form of disaster, while others such as volcanic eruptions have never been felt in these regions.

From the review of different types of risks faced in Florida State, there is no particular group in Orlando City that can be identified as not vulnerable to natural hazards. According to Chan et al. (2020), natural hazards can attack any section of the city leading to disruption of life and destruction of properties. Thus, the processes of risk management in Orlando City need to be designed according to natural disaster management policy and regulation using effective monitoring and control tools.
