Health care reform
Explain how health care reform has helped shift the focus from a disease-oriented health care system to one of wellness and prevention. Discuss ways in which health care will continue this trend and explain the role of nursing in supporting and facilitating this shift. In replies to peers, provide an example of wellness and prevention initiatives your organization or specialty area has in place.
The Transformation of Healthcare Systems
Healthcare reforms focus on replacing the disease-oriented health care systems with wellness and prevention. Different factors such as quality issues, disparities, access problems, and changing disease-type demographics has led to such reforms (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). It is critical for people to be healthy to be more productive, innovative, and of significance to the development of a nation. Health reforms have promoted policies and programs that focus on creating awareness and prevention of diseases. In doing so, they aim to predict and prevent diseases and infections before they occur, thus minimizing the number of resources that could have been used in the event they occur. Such programs have also helped control and manage pandemics. Additionally, they result in better utilization of healthcare resources and reimbursement of services to promote preventive measures.
The emerging healthcare trend will continue in the future. Technological advances in healthcare delivery are the key driving factors, enabling forecasting, prediction, research, and treatment of various health conditions. The trend in promoting wellness and prevention will also require effective and strategic healthcare initiatives that consider the vulnerabilities and needs of the target population. Moreover, more investments in the sector shall ensure that such programs are designed, implemented and evaluated. Some of the wellness and preventive measures initiated by organizations include the rollout and administration of immunizations and vaccines, such as the COVID-19 vaccines that are currently being administered worldwide.
Nurses fit in this healthcare shift in different ways. They are an integral part of the education, reinforcement, and awareness creation programs about wellness and preventive measures. Those working in both private and public sectors will play a key role in encouraging the patients to adopt healthy lifestyles and receive preventive services. Therefore, healthcare reforms will improve service provision, patient outcomes and increase the population receiving the care.
