Reaction-Critique: Determining the Effectiveness of FDA Nutrition Labeling

Various research articles have been authored to evaluate the effectiveness of FDA nutrition labeling on consumer behaviors. In this case, the article to be examined was authored by Hieke & Taylor (2017) and titled “A critical review of the literature on nutritional labeling.” The article was published in the ‘Journal of Consumer Affairs.’

Synopsis and Summary

This article aimed to establish whether FDA nutrition labeling is effective in providing adequate information to customers to inform their decision-making. Hieke & Taylor (2017) conducted a literature review and examined the various aspects of labeling useful in helping consumers understand the information being communicated. Additionally, the format of wording labels and its effect on consumer understanding of the nutrition labeling information was explored. The findings of Hieke & Taylor (2017) were that although FDA food labeling was meant to increase consumer protection through provision of information, existing directives are less helpful than FDA originally intended them.

General Theme

The general theme of the article based on the arguments of Hieke & Taylor (2017) is that the design, as well as the features of nutrition labels, have a huge impact on how consumers are informed and engaged in healthier consumption behaviors.

According to Hieke & Taylor (2017), the format, as well as the design of the nutrition labels and health claims, entails the literal content of the food labels as well as the complexity of information contained in the labels and the amount of product-related information on the particular package. In this issue, the authors argue that consumers have clear references for certain formats of nutrition information compared to others. The second problem is the effects of food labels information on the choices of the consumers. According to Hieke & Taylor (2017), relatively large amounts of nutrition information on the labels can serve to deter users from using the information in making food choices, purchasing, and making various decisions. The third issue is on label wording. Conclusions and Recommendations

Hieke & Taylor (2017) made various conclusions and recommendations based on their findings from the review of the literature. One of the findings is that whereas significant results have been established on the effectiveness of FDA nutrition labeling, a more holistic view is required to aid in the formulation of policy. Additionally, despite FDA nutrition labeling being aimed at increasing consumer protection, consumption trends have led to different results, and the originally intended purposes have not been achieved. Moreover, in most instances, consumer behavior is affected by consumer knowledge, motivation as well as education (Hieke & Taylor, 2017). Recommendations made from this conclusion is at more research should be done on how effective the FDA nutrition labels are in influencing consumer purchasing decisions. Additionally, additionally understanding of nutritional labeling should be done through education of consumers.

Agreement or Disagreement

I cannot agree more with Hieke & Taylor (2017) on the fact that the effectiveness of FDA nutrition labels on consumer protection is not sufficient. Additionally, I agree that consumers understanding of the labels is based on knowledge and information about the same. However, I disagree that the FDA nutrition labels have not been effective in protecting consumers. I hold that since the implementation of FDA nutrition labels, consumers have been more informed in making food choices.

Professional Projections

The article by Hieke & Taylor (2017) has provided various lessons which can be applied in my profession. One of those is that nutrition labels should contain information in a clear and straightforward manner so that consumers do not struggle to understand such information. Additionally, I have established that the fact that products have nutrition labels does not mean that users will use them in making purchasing decisions. In my professional future career, I will use such lessons to ensure that I educate consumers on nutrition food labels and how they can use them to make purchasing and consumptive decisions.(2017) study employed, there are very little room for generalizing the study’s findings.
