Human Service Support

Question 1

According to my perspective and understanding, there are several most critical needs that families in a community affected by a disaster will necessitate. The first need is food aid. It is essential to ensure that food aid reaches the most vulnerable families while adhering to fundamental principles of neutrality and impartiality.  Another acute need is a temporary shelter. This can either be a church, school or camp set aside by the government or disaster response programs. Moreover the families will also need clothes to keep them warm and healthcare services. The most critical long-term needs of the families in a community affected by a disaster include building permanent houses, finding new employments, and relocating to new areas.  The best model to address the above basic needs is through the emergency management approach, which incorporates finding a suitable location where the families can stay as they get back on their feet.

Question 2

One of the approaches that should be integrated into schools to improve academic achievement in at-risk students is tutoring. According to Moeyaert et al. (2019), tutoring can assist strengthen subject understanding, enhance confidence, and develop essential learning skills. Moreover, tutoring provides students with individualized attention that they often do not get in a crowded classroom. Moeyaert et al. (2019) indicates that tutoring keeps learners on track during school breaks including March break or during the summer. Tutoring programs often help at –risk students develop learning and study abilities that will assist set up the learners for success, given that they offer individual and unique learning experiences, one-on-one attention, enhances attitude towards school and learning, promotes self-paced and self-directed learning, improves self-esteem and encourages freedom to ask questions.
