    Passage 1: Regulatory Function/Directive Function

    This function of language seeks to influence the behavior of others. Here, the U.S Internal Revenue Service is directing or instructing those seeking its service what to do.

    Passage 2: Poetic Function (also called Aesthetic Function)

    This concerns the beauty of the language itself particularly as regards its texture and sound and the contextual balance that elevates it as a piece of poetic utterance or auditory art.
