Unlike in earlier centuries, this century has seen an explosion in interconnectedness. People around the world are now connected economically, socially, politically and even environmentally. Technology remains the key driver of this interconnectedness. It makes it possible for people in different countries to communicate and share ideas while in different parts of the world. The dependence on interconnectedness, however, poses various long-term and short-term implications. This paper reviews the need for cyber security and continuous research as the long-term implications of the increasing dependence on constant and immediate interconnectedness. These implications are reviewed in terms of the responsibilities of corporations involved in creating the technology.       

The ever-growing need for cyber security is a long-term implication of the increasing dependence on constant and immediate interconnectedness. Nearly all technological systems can be hacked. Statistics on cybercrime indicate that cybercrime has turned out to be more profitable than the illegal drug trade being conducted all over the world. Statistics further indicates that a hacking attack occurs after every 39 seconds. Galov (2020) also points that hacking is no longer about fun but about profits and cybercrime will cost the world an approximate $6 trillion dollars by 2021. Since technology is the key driver of interconnectedness, this puts a responsibility on the corporations involved in creating this technology to ensure their systems can ward of hackers. They are tasked with ensuring that cyber-attacks do not debilitate their technology as interconnectedness is largely dependent on it. Hence, the ever-growing need for cyber security is a long-term implication of the increasing dependence on constant and immediate interconnectedness.

 The need for continuous research is another long-term implication of the increasing dependence on constant and immediate interconnectedness. As mentioned earlier, technology drives interconnectedness. However, no technology is complete. Human needs keep growing complex and thus continuous research is needed to ensure technology meets these human needs. Corporations involved in creating this technology are therefore tasked with continuously doing research. They have to try out new ideas and methods to ensure their technology continuously meets the needs of the people. Hence, the need for continuous research is another long-term implication of the increasing dependence on constant and immediate interconnectedness.

In conclusion, technology remains the key driver of this interconnectedness. Due to the scary statistics on hacking and cybercrime, corporations involved in creating the technology that drives interconnectedness have a responsibility to ensure their technology is safe and can ward off hackers. Also, since no technology is complete and human needs keep growing complex, these corporations have to do continuous research.
