Master Patient Index (MPI) Technology

A master patient index (MPI) refers to an index of known patients occupying a single organization whose visits are collectively linked using a single identifier, characteristically by a medical record number. The management activities of an MPI are basically aligned to a software application for identifying, coordinating, and listing database information. Electronic MPIs have been in use dating back from the 1980s. MPI replaced the historical process of completing index cards manually. This paper discusses the purpose and importance of the MPI, and thereafter, summarize one new thing that I have learned from the reading articles and how it relates to the need to eliminate duplicate records. 

The data within an MPI system is a crucial component in delivery of patient care, enhancing accuracy information like prior visits, allergies, and medication lists. The system has fundamental components that build it and best practices for their maintenance. The system encompasses both enterprise and organizational-level activities that are electronically automated because healthcare institutions are implementing fast-moving trains to embrace electronic health records. MPIs facilitate the entire process. The foundation of the success of an MPI is built on the capacity to affect all areas within the healthcare enterprise as a strategy of increasing practice efficacy. Effective and highly accurate MPI databases enable healthcare organizations and other HIES to effectively improve patient care, support information exchange regimes, reduce medical risks, and enhance the national health infrastructure.

Basing on the fact that MPI is purely a database for maintaining a unique identifier for any patient that visits, it is important to correctly identify the data elements of an MPI at an organizational or enterprise level. The core data must be properly standardized and well defined in order to link the accurate clinical data from patient visit to visit. Basically, MPI system enhances operational efficiency by streamlining the day to day activities on an electronic base. When properly defined, these core information elements become a distinct basis for identifying medical errors in reports, matching algorithms, programming staff training initiatives as well as enhancing quality measurements. At a minimum, an effective MPI data element should disclose a longitudinal health records, enhance ready access to patient health information, and further facilitate clinical system linkage.

There is much that I have learnt with regards to the master patient index system and how it relates to healthcare efficiency. In the current world, it is important for hospital organizations to embrace the technological changes to ensure that all operations align with the best innovative changes. Clearly, duplicate information is as a result of insufficient patient information when providing medical records, inability for a physician to efficiently capture key information (especially when a patient is unconscious), clerical typos and transpositions, as well as EHR system limitations during naming conventions. Additionally, several errors and system processes may contribute to issues regarding duplicate creations. A number of processes relate to duplicate information and can possibly affect the quality of MPI data. These include lack of effective staff training, lack of operational standards, difficulties in registering laboratory specimens, lack of data verification, informal business processes and workflows as well as decentralized registration and converted data issues. All these duplicate errors affect the quality of MPI data.

In conclusion, a master patient index (MPI) is a technological innovation of great importance within the medical field. It facilitates operational processes and improves quality of medical care provided. However, duplicate information and errors can possibly affect the quality of MPI data provided.
