My name is Bhupinder Kaur and I live in London (UK). I belong to Punjab state in India. Here I would like to share some of my views about mental health problems:

In my opinion mental health should be considered as other physical health conditions. Learning from personal experience, I think that the Bipolar or Schizophrenia type of mental health conditions must be taken more seriously. This is to reduce the risk of patients self harm or being danger to others.

I myself being from Asian back ground have known that mental illness is counted as stigma in some (asian) communities, which cuts the patient off from the society. In my knowledge, this is due to lack of awareness in some individuals.

Different belief system in communities plays big part of not being aware of the mental health issues. For example, some believe that spirits (from dead) enters in patient’s body and starts controlling the person’s mind. The believers use this methodology to get rid of unknown sprits. However, these types of beliefs could make patient’s condition worst.

Lastly I would say that the patient’s condition must be diagnosed professionally and appropriate treatment should be taken under expert’s guidelines. Also possible support from near and dear ones, is ideal to get the patient better or bring him/her in stable condition.

Answer

Mental Health in a Societal Context

Mental health is a state of well-being mentally in which people realize their abilities to handle their environmental engagement. It entails the ability to cope with the usual stresses of life, work productively and fruitfully, and make a significant contribution to the community. As such, mental health is the ability to respond to various challenges. Such challenges may include anticipation from exams, social bullying or rejection, relationship issues, a family argument, or losing a loved one or family member. Additionally, mental health is the capability of bouncing back from setbacks (Mind Matters Australia, 2015). The bousing back depends on several factors – risk and protective factors. Protective factors include self-efficacy, a supportive family, and strong friendship.

On the other hand, risk factors include chronic -ailment and loss of socio-economic status. However, it is critical to note that the protective factors can offset the risk factors. Therefore, mental health is a state of mind that enables one to manage all the stresses that life presents.

Notably, youth have mental health difficulties such as anxiety or depression. Mental health is a continuum experience, whereby at some point, one might have good or stable mental health the next moment could be unstable mental health. Some of the continuum experiences may include sadness, worried or frustration (MindMatters Australia, 2015). However, whenever these experiences accumulate, it might lead to s mental instability. Subsequently, mental health difficulties or instabilities might result in recognized disorders. More important to note is that nobody occupies a dormant state within the continuum since mental stability is a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors; hence change in these factors alters the continuum state.

First Respondent on Social Context of Mental Health

The first respondent provided an opinion based on personal experience that severe mental health conditions like Bipolar or Schizophrenia should be classified as a physical health condition. This consideration might mitigate the risk of a patient’s self-harm and be a danger to other people. Due to the respondent’s background – Asian – mental illness is considered a stigma that cuts the patient off society. The respondent believes that this stigmatization is due to a lack of adequate awareness. Additionally, the respondent thinks that different societal belief systems play a critical role in unaware of various mental health issues. As a result, they handle mental health issues based on their beliefs that usually worsens the conditions. Therefore, the respondent insisted that mental problems should be professionally diagnosed and appropriate treatment should come from an expert and support from dear ones.

Personal Response

The mental health issue is a serious concern that needs numerous supports from all corners within a society. Societal beliefs and how they hand mental illness matter since it can either save a life or worsen the condition or perhaps destroy a life that they could have saved. For instance, Ben Congleton’s response – the CEO – to Madalyn’s email about taking mental health leave for two days would have destroyed her was it negative. However, the positivity of the CEO’s response wind a mile is restoring or reassuring the mental status of other employees and colleagues. Therefore, I believe that mental health awareness can be the simplest way to reduce stigmatization. Moreover, people with mental health stability should seek help from professionals with an appropriate treatment guideline.

Summary of the Social Context of Mental Health.

Mental illnesses such as Bipolar or Schizophrenia could be serious about being considered a physical condition and handled. When it comes to managing mental health, societal background and belief play a fundamental role. For instance, some societal or community beliefs might lead to stigmatization due to a lack of awareness of mental health issues. Otherwise, these societal and community beliefs might worsen a condition. Additionally, Ben Congleton’s response – the CEO handled Madalyn’s situation appropriately. Therefore, as a colleague, the CEO played a critical role in encouraging other employees to open up and avoid stigmatizing others with mental health issues.

Ruby suffered from mental health stigma and misunderstanding from her close friends and people she knew never sent her followers and cards like people suffering from other illnesses. Instead, she goes through numerous phone calls telling her to pack up as if she never sick (TED Talks, 2012). They made her feel ashamed due to her lack of brain. Psychologically, children can develop mental health issues when abused verbally since the brain might produce a chemical that hinders full brain development. The child might be unable to differentiate good from the bad.

One of the main reasons and factors contributing to the highest reported rate of mental health-related issues includes low payment or economic and financial constraints. Primarily, people who work as constrictions as building laborers tend to feel that they do a lot of work or engage in labor-intensive activities with low payment. Whenever this frustration is added to the financial responsibilities from home, makes their mind oblast. Moreover, these laborers feel more depressed, especially whenever they feel financially deprived since most employers. Another reason for the high number of reported numbers of mental health issues from the employees is that most cases have been made open. The system has encouraged talks on mental health and offered assistance to the employees, unlike what used to happen. Due to a lack of awareness, mental health issues were accompanied by stigmatization.

In summary, it is essential involving employees in the promotion or creating awareness or about work advocates about mental health. Firstly, whenever the employees are involved in the health promotion on mental health process, it becomes accessible to manage the illness. Additionally, it is essential to apply the management or employers and the leadership in mental health awareness since they could encourage openness by talking about their own experience. Furthermore, the administration can also empower mental health awareness champions to motivate employees to open up about their mental health status and seek help (Keane, 2020). Moreover, employers must create a counselling department that deals with mental health issues at work to help them manage their condition well and maintain their productivity level.

Reflection on Mental Health

Generally, mental illnesses such as Bipolar or Schizophrenia could be serious about being considered a physical condition and handled as such. When it comes to managing mental health, societal background and belief play a fundamental role. For instance, some societal or community beliefs might lead to stigmatization due to a lack of awareness of mental health issues. Otherwise, these societal and community beliefs might worsen a condition. Additionally, the creation of mental health awareness is critical to most companies, departments, and organizations. It should go beyond society or community awareness. As such, every individual has a role to play in the management and awareness creation of mental health issues.
