PPO is an open-access HMO and is managed differently from the HMO care plan. In a PPO plan, Physicians are contracted to deliver medical care to specific
groups of individuals who partake in the PPO. It’s like the HMO plan, but there is no gatekeeper in the PPO plan. There’s no referral needed to see a specialist,
but there is an increased cost. The patient doesn’t pay a monthly fee like HMOs but pays monthly out-of-pocket expenses like deductibles and copays per
visit. According to Betman (2022), “one advantage of the PPO system is more freedom in choosing the provider, as well as the ability to see a specialist
without prior approval of a primary care physician.” Discuss.
