Professional Code of Ethics in Practice

Social work happens to be among the disciplines that serve on interdisciplinary teams, as in the case of the nursing practice (Nimmagadda & Murphy, 2014). American Nurses Association (ANA) provides the code of ethics for nurses, whereas the American National Association of social workers provides the code of the ethics for social workers. The code of ethics associated with the ANA and ANASW resemble each other in the sense that they establish a standard of practice behavior needed for each member of their respective profession and guide practice decisions. Moreover, these codes of ethics resemble each other in their emphasis on social justice, competence, service, worth and dignity of the person, integrity, and importance of human associations (NASW, 2019; ANA, 2015). Despite having these similarities, the two codes of ethics differ from each other in the sense that the code of ethics for social workers emphasizes the responsibility of social workers to the broader society, whereas this responsibility is not emphasized in the code of ethics for nurses provided by ANA. Besides, the code of ethics for ANA covers nine essential provisions, whereas that of the ANASW covers six primary areas (NASW, 2019; ANA, 2015). 

The movie, “My Sister’s Keeper” is about is about a moral and ethical theory, as well as professional codes of ethics. This movie centers on professional and personal values, utility of professional codes of ethics in practice, and ethics associated with genetic selection (Vandenhouten & Groessl, 2014). In this movie, a character Anna Fitzgerald played by Abigail Breslin, who is conceived through in-vitro fertilization and brought into the world to act as a genetic match for elder sister Kate played by Sofia Vassilieva. Kate suffers from acute promyelocytic leukemia. Anna is incapable of living the life she desires owing to Kate’s dependency on her. She has to be in and out of hospital regularly and she cannot partake in extracurricular activities like soccer or cheerleading. Upon turning 13, Kate goes into renal failure. Being aware that she will have to provide one of her kidneys to Kate, Anna decides to sue her parents for liberty to her own body and medical emancipation. Attorney Campbell Alexander played by Alec Baldwin approves working for Anna pro bono (IMDb, 2019).
