      Details: After reading case study 2-2 (Taco Bell) about the still hot GMO controversy, draft a communication strategy memo. In preparing the document, identify yourself as a Taco Bell senior manager who has been asked to provide advice to Laurie Gannon regarding the issue she and the company are facing. Address your strategy memo to Ms. Laurie Gannon, Public Relations Director at Taco Bell Corporation. Write clearly and concisely (but not skimpily)! Remember that you must provide your audience with relevant pieces of information. But do not force them to wade through unnecessary information.

       

      With respect to content (and as a basis for your memo), use the relevant sections of the case as well as the concepts from the assigned textbook chapters. Remember that communicating strategically means communicating plans that directly support organizational goals. 

       

      With respect to structure, use the sample strategy memo in your textbook, Appendix D, page 387. Apply the sample thoroughly. Be sure that your discussion section explains and interprets relevant background facts and is the basis for the recommendations.

The upcoming media coverage about one of the products will present the image of our organization in bad light. As such, it is critical that we take necessary measures that will ensure that the company’s image is not damaged (Rourke, 2013).

 

Background

In 1996, our company got into partnership with Kraft foods for the manufacture, distribution, and sale of Taco Bell labelled Taco shells. Two years later, the EPA licensed Aventis for use as an animal feed. However, it was not to be used for human food supply. After a series of tests were done in 2000 for 23 of the leading corn foods, it was concluded that the taco shells, which contained Cry9c, were unfit for the consumption of humans. At present, you, well as Taco Bell Corporation have received a notification for the release of damaging information on the taco shells.

 

Discussion

The release of such information will undoubtedly affect our image, products, and hence our profitability. As such, it is critical that we take measures meant at ensuring that we manage this crisis and assure our customers of the safety of our products.

 

Recommendations

It is recommended that you consult all relevant departments, especially the PR, and prepare a comprehensive statement that will be meant to counter the effects of the press release. At the same time, the products subject of the release should be recalled immediately. Additionally, consult the EPA to make sure that no breach has been done. The legal team should also be conducted toe ensure that they deal with any suits arising from the release.
