QUESTION

The Awesome Parent

Activity 3 – “THE AWESOME PARENT”

It is important to promote healthy physical, cognitive, social and emotional growth in infancy and early childhood. Review Chapters 4 – 8 and complete Activity 2, The Awesome Parent. Your task as the “awesome parent” is to design two new toys that promote growth in each of these areas.

The first toy should be designed for “infants and toddlers – ages 0 – 3 years” and the second toy for “preschoolers and early school aged children – ages 4 – 8 years.” You cannot use the same toy or design. Each toy needs to be age appropriate and consider the child’s level of physical and motor development, sensory and perceptual development, cognitive and language development, and social and emotional development.
Create a Name for each toy.
Describe each toy in detail, i.e., it’s appearance and functions, whether is it designed for a girl or boy or both.
Explain in detail how each toy is designed to promote positive physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth.

Infant/Toddlers

TOY/Name: Moving Tunnel Box

DECSRIPTION

The moving tunnel box is play toy that is designed by joining together two sizeable boxes open at both ends. The boxes are joined at 90 degrees to form a short tunnel that the toddler can crawl through from one end to the other. The design is such that when the toddler is at one end, they cannot see the other end they will leave through. The trick is to provide them with an opportunity to successfully crawl through from one end to the other. The Moving Tunnel Box is designed for both girls and boys.

PROMOTING PHYSICAL, COGNITIVE, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL GROWTH

Physical growth is encouraged by this toy when the toddler is able to crawl from one end of the tunnel to the other and repeat the process. It not only enables him/her to practice current physical skills through the hands on crawling act but also provides room for the toddler to develop new ones.

The cognitive aspect of growth is promoted in that when the child is on one end of the tunnel, they do not see the end. They have to crawl through in order to conceptualize that it is only through movement that they would get from one end of the tunnel to the other. Once this is established, they can repeat it as much as possible.

Socially, this tunnel can be used by two or three toddlers all at once. They just have to figure out that they must all be going in through one end and out through the other. When they go in through different ends and meet within the tunnel, this would encourage problem solving (Healey, & Mendelsohn, 2019).

The emotional element of growth is encouraged when there are adults who act as an appreciative audience for the success of the child each time they get through the tunnel.

PRE-SCHOOLERS

TOY/Name: Play Doctor Kit

DESCRIPTION

This toy set consists of a bag in which toy doctor kit including items like a plastic stethoscope, toy syringe, a white overall, toy thermometer and syringe are kept.

PROMOTING PHYSICAL, COGNITIVE, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL GROWTH

The physical aspect of growth is promoted when the children have to help the “injured” patient move from one location to the “hospital” setting by having them on their backs as ambulances or offering them a leaning shoulder.

The cognitive aspect is enhanced by the appreciation that different injuries call for different modes of treatment. The children become innovative through performing CPRs, taking temperature readings and working to help the patient recover depending on what their problem is.

The social element is promoted in that this toy kit has to be used by more than one child. The children then can learn to role play by some being the patients and others the doctors and changing these roles time to time.

Finally, the emotional aspect of growth that this toy kit promotes is that it ensures that kids can play through some of their worst fears on injury, disease or relatively painful medical procedures like receiving shots (Karadimitriou, 2019).
