IOM Summary of Four Messages and Significance to Nursing Practice

There are four messages in the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report titled “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health”.  One of the messages in the report is that nurses, ought to practice to the full-extent of their nursing school training and education. The other message in the report is that nurses should strive to attain higher levels of training and education through an improved education system to promote continuous education and training. The third message of the IOM report is that nurses can ideally practice as full-partners to physicians and other healthcare teams. The fourth message of the IOM report is that improved information infrastructure ad improved data collection strategies are necessary to inform effective policy-making and workforce planning (Sullivan, 2018).

Influence of IOM on Education, Leadership, Benefits and Opportunities for BSN-Prepared Nurses

The key messages in the IOM report encourages and facilitates nurses to pursue further/continuous education and training (University of Saint Mary, 2021.). Educational and training opportunities ensures that there is large cadre of emerging nurses with diverse roles at any time and well-prepared to take up new roles (Dyess et al., 2016). More resources and structures are required to support improved transition of new nursing graduates for education and training environment to the workplace (University of Saint Mary, 2021).

In line with pursuit for higher education and training the core competencies in nursing have expanded significantly over the last several decades, including geriatric leadership, public health, change management, and teamwork (University of Saint Mary, 2021). Changes made following implementation of IOM report provides support and avenues for nurses to provide simple and direct profession to higher degrees. The IOM report recommends further expansion of avenues for nurses to earn higher degrees (University of Saint Mary, 2021). However, schools of nursing have a tendency of turning down applications of thousands of qualified applicants as a result of lack of faculty, limited classroom spaces, and lack of clinical placement sites. Competing priorities, perceived lack of value in higher degree, and financial issues are some of the other reasons that make individuals not to seek BSN degree (Palatnik, 2016).

Significance of Professional Development and Lifelong Learning

The definitive goal of the report is to enhance patient outcomes and improve healthcare for populations of diverse backgrounds across the lifespan (University of Saint Mary, 2021). With the increasing complexity of the healthcare practice environment the development of future nurse leaders has gained more attention and importance. The development of future nurse leaders in an important obligation of the nurse leaders (Dyess et al., 2016).  To promote continuous professional development and lifelong learning, nurse educators are expected to continue review and assess teaching-learning strategies, education curricula, and various programs that are designed to prepare new nurses (Fawaz, Hamdan-Mansour & Tassi, 2018).  As a member of a team, nurses should work collaboratively with doctors, dieticians and other health care professionals (University of Saint Mary, 2021).

Effectiveness of Nurses Management Patient Care Within an Evolving Health Care System

Nursing education has far-reaching impact on competencies and knowledge. Nurses with Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees are allowed to address various patient needs, advance science to patient’s benefits, and improve ability of nurses to deliver high quality and safe patient care (Fawaz et al., 2018). Nursing practice environment in the 21st Century is challenged by different demands such as elevated numbers of critically-ill patients and elder patients. These issues increase deficit of nursing educators and nursing staff, am age-shift among the nursing workforce, and the increased number of elderly patients (Fawaz et al., 2018).

Nurses find themselves in a storm in healthcare due to increasing size of the aging population. In 2014, it was estimated that three million baby boomers who were born in 1946 to 1964 are going to reach the age of 65 years by the next 20 years. This population will present a growing need of healthcare services thus increasing the demands on the already burdened or challenged healthcare system. Nurses who fall on the baby boomer cohort are also expected to retire in large numbers over the years and this will reduce the number of healthcare providers; especially the nursing workforce. Generation Y nurses, nurses born between 1980 and 2000, were projected to have made up 50% of the nursing labor force by 2020. Young nurse leaders have exceptional opportunities to perform key roles as they partner with other healthcare professionals to lead design and improvement of the health system as well as practice environments (Dyess et al., 2016).

Nurses are now involved actively in caring for complex patients, through utilization of technology as well as by digesting and synthesizing information from various sources (University of Saint Mary, 2021). Higher education improves competencies in evidence-based practice, collaboration, leadership, patient outcomes, health policy, and systems thinking (Palatnik, 2016).
