Ethnomethodological and Ethnographic Research Analysis

During analysis of qualitative data, the researcher can choose between a vast amount of choices. The researcher can make his or her choice based on experiences and inclinations. Ethnomethodological and ethnographic research approaches are two alternatives that can be used. This essay compares and contrasts the purpose of ethnomethodological and ethnographic research analysis.

Ethnomethodological research is described as the analysis that involves inspection of how people use everyday occurrences and interactions to form their outlook of the world (Due, 2021). Ethnomethodological research concerns how social order is expressed through social interactions. Specifically, ethnomethodologists do not believe that there is an objective truth or reality (Lucken, 2021). The research relates to the way participants create and retain a sense of reality that is of purpose. This type of research portrays how individuals initiate a social culture depending on their view as opposed to the actual culture.

Ethnographic research can be explained as the study of cultures shared by a group of people (Due, 2021). Ethnographic, sometimes called naturalistic research, attempts to comprehend culture in a social way within cultural practices. The research attempts to characterize the world depending on how people in that cultural environment see it. The procedure of ethnographic research is composed of researchers’ experience during the study of cultural groups.

Ethnomethodological research provides a set of techniques applied in ethnographic research to come up with accounts of negotiating the daily circumstances of individuals. Due (2021) asserts that both ethnomethodological and ethnographic research are used in examining and studying how social interactions shape people’s view of culture. Ethnographic research analysis entails examining culture from a social perspective according to how people perceive it. On the other hand, ethnomethodological research analysis entails sustaining detachments from cultures. Unlike ethnographic analysis which attempts to describe the social world as observed by people, ethnomethodological research analysis seeks to maintain a distance from the cultural world.

In conclusion, ethnomethodological and ethnographic research approaches have their similarities and differences when dealing with qualitative data. Ethnomethodological research portrays how social order is produced from social interactions, while ethnographic research offers to study the behavior of persons within a specific situation that comprehends their behavior through explanations. The two approaches are similar in that they both attempt to study social culture within human behavior. The factors within ethnomethodological research are entirely used in the ethnographic research approach.
