Answer

How to be True to Your Word

The main reason for discussing my personal experience is to provide individuals with an insight into how a person did not adhere to his promises and how this individual’s character impacted our relationship and my work. I work for a retail firm that is very hard to be promoted. I got hired by the company in 2020 during the pandemic and I have continued to work there until today. Throughout, I have always had an ambition of becoming the best by showcasing my abilities in the hopes of being recognized for hard work and dedication.

My workplace posts vacancies for employees to apply for new work opportunities. Regardless of a new employee, I applied to a position every time it was posted and hoped I would get back great results. My managers consider specific traits when seeking the right applicant for a position. These traits often include attendance and tardiness, work morals among others. Seniority has often been the center of consideration playing a significant role in the selection procedure. I have always considered myself fit for a top position such as being the supervisor.

My hard work and determination were seen by my colleagues and managers. It is at this point that my manager, John Michigan, encouraged me to apply for the supervisory position that he will back me up. With the support of the manager, it was easy for me to get promoted to a supervisor. However, the manager never kept his word. Instead, he appointed another worker, his friend, who was relatively new in the company. This unfaithfulness made me lose trust towards the manager and decreased my work morale to the extent I had to quit the job. From my perspective, unfaithfulness is wrong since besides making one lose trust towards someone, it affects an individual’s morale and self-esteem.

In his article, How to be True to Your Word, Cat Thompson utilizes consequentialist reasoning about what is wrong with unfaithfulness. According to the author, “when our words don’t match our actions, we lose a measure of healthy ownership and control over our lives” (Thompson, 2017, p. 8). For instance, this can be portrayed by individuals making a promise to themselves to visit the gym but fail to do so, consequently losing control over their lives. In these modern days, people are losing control of their lives. They make commitments which they fail to keep. Moreover, people lie to themselves when they have complete control of a circumstance and fail to recognize the results (Thompson, 2017). Faithfulness can hurt the people close to us and result in broken relationships.

Observing my situation, the manager’s unfaithfulness made me quit my job since I felt unappreciated and seen as someone who cannot lead. Furthermore, had the manager been honest with me, and told me that I was not qualified for the supervisor’s position, I would not have considered applying for it until the right time. However, he lied that I qualified and promised to back me up, only to disappoint me at the last minute. Besides hurting others, unfaithfulness can risk losing an employee, a friend, or a relative. Therefore, being true in your word is necessary for a strong and prosperous relationship.
