In the current internet age, credit card transactions are increasingly being used over the internet which further suggests why instances of credit card fraud have also risen over the years. The aim of this report is to explore credit card fraud as a means of online crime. Additionally, the report seeks to document the methodologies of preventing the fraud as related to the situational crime prevention theory.

Definition and scale of the crime

Credit card fraud is one of the common types of online crimes experienced by internet users. Credit card fraud refers to a situation whereby another person users a credit card belonging to a different person to make unauthorized purchases (Akila & Bhuvaneswari, 2018). The activity associated with credit card fraud can take place in different way. For instance, if a person loses their credit card or have it stolen, it can be used to complete purchases which can take place online or in person. Fraudsters also have the ability of stealing credit card details such as the security code, pin, and account number. With this information, it becomes simple to complete unauthorized transactions without requiring a physical credit card. This forms a basis of a type of fraud referred to as card-not-present fraud (Akila & Bhuvaneswari, 2018).

Hadar (2019) provides an indication that the card not present fraud has worsened over the years in the U.S. Evidently, in 2016, the number of card-not-present fraud increased to $4.57 billion. This marks a rise of up to 34% from the value recorded previously in 2015. The situation has resulted to drastic impacts for small businesses and individual customers and their shopping experience (Hadar, 2019). The case of credit card fraud is continually becoming serious. Hadar (2019) notes that millions of American is considered as fraud victims which affect the region’s economy. Notably, credit card fraud is costly as it negatively affects the economy by depriving it billions of dollars. If a person becomes a victim of credit card fraud, the situation can be detrimental to one’s personal finances. This can disrupt one’s psychological as well as their emotional wellbeing which arises from an increased level of stress derived from the experienced credit fraud event. Despite this, it is evident that different tools can be used to protect identity theft which further results to cases of credit card theft.

Levi (2017) states that most credit card fraud victims are naïve since most of them fail to take requisite measures to protect themselves from the crime in the best way as it should have be. For instance, most of the credit card fraud victims fail to rely on the existing tools and techniques which can keep off the fraudsters to protect their personal information when engaging in online transactions.                 The victims of the credit card fraud have also faced the credit card fraud mainly as a result of the psychological vulnerability facing them. However, most of the people who fall in this trap are known to be highly vulnerable with most of them being inexperienced in establishing a fake email requesting for their personal credit details from the legitimate ones (Levi, 2017).

Using Credit rather than Debit Cards

The use of credit cards rather than debit cards whenever possible is considered as the best way in which one can protect themselves from online fraud. According to Gilmour (2016), the maximum loss which one can experience when transacting through the use of a debit card fraud is $50 noted within a period of two days after learning about the theft or loss or $500 if one reports the fraud between a period of two to 60 days after it is noticed. However, if one fails to report the fraudulent activity within a period of 60 days, one could lose the whole amount withdrawn from the account (Anandarajan & Malik, 2018). The use of credit cards prevents instances of such huge losses. Evidently, this reduces the amount of benefits the offender is likely to enjoy if the crime takes place.
