Answer

Discuss the differences between two models of health and healing as they relate to what it means to be human

Group and individual beliefs on illness, health, and healing affect individuals’ healthcare behavior that in turn shapes models of health and healing. Examples of such models of health and healing include the body-mind-spirit model and the biopsychosocial model. Critical to the discussion is the fact that practitioners from the healthcare industry should understand differences between the biomedical and the biopsychosocial models because it will help them become better professionals. It is important to define the bio-psychosocial model and the body-mind-spirit model because understanding the meaning of the models under discussion lay the foundation for the upcoming discussion.

The bio-psychosocial model argues that psychological, biological, and social factors are crucial to the normal functioning of the human body. Simply put, the model posits that the health of humans is understood better after considering social, biological, and psychological factors affecting a given person (Feldman and Alexander, 2012). On the contrary, the biomedical approach of health and healing reveals that injury and illness are biological problems that have biomedical remedies. For instance, the biomedical model suggests that all diseases and injuries can be explained by a factor causing deviations in the normal functions of a human body. Such factors could include viruses, abnormal genes, and abnormal development (Feldman and Alexander, 2012)..

From the definitions of the biomedical and bio-psychosocial models, it can be deduced that the biomedical model is mechanical. In fact, Feldman and Alexander (2012) reveals that medical professionals from as early as the sixteenth century believed that medical solutions could be achieved by dissecting the human body. On the contrary, the bio-psychosocial model of healing and health began with a scholar called George Engel in the 20th century. Therefore, it is evident that the biomedical model began earlier than bio-psychosocial model. This relates to human nature because Feldman and Alexander (2012) reveal that a majority of the human populations believe in the biomedical model because it was developed early.

Differences between the biomedical model discussed and professional presence

It is important to understand the meaning of the phrase professional presence because it will enable the reader to understand how it could be differentiated from the biomedical model of health and healing. Consequently, the term professional presence could be elucidated as the demonstration of confidence, respect, compassion, optimism, empathy, and integrity for practitioners in the healthcare industry (Feldman and Alexander, 2012). It is also important to highlight that the professional presence includes elements such as current beliefs, attitudes, and actions regarding health and healing. Critical to the debate is the reality that the biomedical model differs from professional presence because the philosophy that guides the model clashes with elements of professional presence. Considering that I am a mindful professional, I believe that my professional presence differs from the biomedical model of healing.

For example, it is clear that professional presence includes empathy and as Feldman and Alexander (2012) argue, empathy could help patients recuperate quickly. However, the biomedical model asserts that all diseases and injuries have medical remedies. Evidently, the biomedical model clashes with my belief that nurses could help patients recover quickly by being empathetic. It is because empathy is not a medical remedy yet the model posits that all remedies must be biomedical. It is also notable that Feldman and Alexander (2012) argue that nurses should display positive attitudes towards patients because, like empathy, displaying the right attitude towards patients also helps them in their recovery. Vital to the discussion is the fact that displaying the right attitude is also not a biomedical solution. Therefore, it could be deduced that the biomedical model of health and healing differs from my professional presence because the model insists that all remedies must be biomedical.

How Mindfulness Affects my Nursing Practice

Studies reveal that being mindful affects how nurses conduct their daily activities. I too agree with the results from such studies because I have witnessed how being mindful has influenced my nursing profession. For instance, I have used self-attunement by first choosing to connect with myself before connecting to others. It is because I realize that my emotions are contagious implying I realize that my emotions could affect my patients. As a result, I always strive to think positively and avoid judging my patients because I believe such actions boost my patients’ ability to recover quickly. In fact, I always try to boost the emotional state of patients using humor, which makes my patients comfortable.

Apart from self-attunement, I also use self-clarity because I have a clear purpose. It owes to the reality that I am constantly expanding the scope of my expertise and knowledge. It is because I believe that my thoughts and opinions about my profession influence my behaviors, choices, and relationships. It follows that having a clear purpose in my career influences my profession by keeping me focused to my career. Simply put, the fact that I have a defined purpose with my life ensures that I remain motivated to pursue my career, by providing me with a set of objectives and guidelines.

Ultimately, mindfulness also influences my nursing career because I realize that I have to be compassionate to my patients. It is because I tend to be compassionate to myself, which also extends to how I relate with friends and workmates. As evidence, I always talk to my workmates and patients the way I speak to myself. As a result, I am always able to build fruitful relationships not only between my patients, and me but also between my workmates and me. This has been particularly encouraging because it always ensures that I avoid disagreements in my profession. In short, being a mindful person contributes positively to my career by enabling me to build fruitful relationships at my workplace.

Challenges or Barriers that Could Be Minimized By Your Enhanced Self-Awareness When Working With Opposite Personality Types.

After examining aspects of my professional presence, I realize that some challenges and barriers could be minimized when working with people of the opposite personality types. For instance, I realize that I need to be careful not to offload my responsibilities when working with people of the ISTJ personality type. As evidence Kroeger, Thuesen, and Rutledge (2009) argues that people of the ISTJ personality are hardworking and seek security, stability, and always consider it a personal obligation to maintain a smooth operation I the workplace. Additionally, the same author further reveals that such people are hard working and tend to spend a lot of energy to ensure that organizational goals are met. This implies that the ISTJ personality type will take on other peoples’ responsibilities when other workers tend to drag them behind or fail to meet their expectations. Critical to the discussion is the fact that they do it quietly because they always keep their opinions to themselves.

Clearly, people of the ISTJ personality type have a characteristic that could be a strength or a weakness depending on their relationship with other workmates. For example, other people could exploit the nature of ISTJ personality types by letting them do their work. Considering that ISTJ personality types keep their opinions to themselves, they are likely to continue taking on other people’s responsibilities without complaining. However, the same people have a breaking point implying they will keep on taking their workmate’s responsibilities until it is too late. It follows that I realize that working with people of such personality types means that I have to be careful not to offload my duties to them. However, I also realize that such people like to help other with their work, which makes them happy. In short, I will allow people of the ISTJ personality type to help me with my work, but I will always be careful enough to ensure that I do not overwork them.

Through the professional presence exercise, I realize that I also have to overcome certain challenges when working with people of the ESTJ personality type. This owes to the truth that people of the ESTJ personality type, also called supervisors, always tend to have leadership skills. It is because they are traditional; have a defined understanding of what is right or wrong, and socially unite people and families. One of the outstanding traits of such personalities is the fact that they lead by example, demonstrate dedication, honesty, and reject traits such as cheating and laziness utterly. Further, such people expect others to meet their high standards in the job place without realizing that people have different talents. Above all, ESTJ personality types are sure about their knowledge and beliefs. As a result, they often tend to overcome heavy resistance because of their fundamental belief of what is wrong and right.

Evidently, people of the ESTJ personality type are leaders who expect their followers to meet their standards. In fact, Kroeger, Thuesen, and Rutledge (2009) argues that they will always pressure their subordinates to meet their standards devoid of considering that people have different abilities. As a result, I realize that I have to expect a lot of pressure from people with such personality types because they are programed to have certain expectations from their employees. However, I will always try to make them understand that I am a different to avoid confrontations with such workmates. In fact, I will try to use their defined principles to make them understand that I am different because they are stubborn when dealing with subordinates. Further, being a mindful person implies that I am passionate about my job and that I am always dedicated to my responsibilities. It follows that I will strive to remain dedicated to my responsibilities in order to meet expectations of supervisors.

I am compassionate about my job and realize that in order to remain so, I have to relate well with ENTJ personality types.  I believe that people of the ENTJ personality type, also known as the executives, could be difficult people to work with. It is because such people are often insensitive when it comes to emotions of their peers. As evidence, Kroeger, Thuesen, and Rutledge (2009) reveal that executives are ruthless and rational and use their sharp minds and determination to achieve their objectives.  It is vital to highlight that ENTJs also believe that they could accomplish almost anything given the time and resources. As a result, they can hold a long-term focus given a long-term duty. Additionally, the executives negotiate toughly not because they do not care about opinions from other people, but because they like challenges, battle of wits, and would do whatever it takes to emerge victorious.

Considering the traits of executives, I realize that I have to negotiate toughly for my opinions and policies to stand debates from ENTJ personalities. Furthermore, the same people tend to have a long-term focus and an ability to complete challenging tasks. This implies that I interacting with executives will give me the required energy to complete difficult tasks. Specifically, I will seek the help of executives when faced with involving tasks. This will not only, gain me help, but it will also provide me with the required emotional support to complete difficult tasks. Ultimately, I realize that I am prone to get hurt when working with executives because they do not care about other people’s emotions. However, I also realize that they rarely intend to hurt their colleagues, but they act based on what they believe is right. Evidently, I will be keen when interacting with executives, because I prefer to be communicated to with certain, which is not always the case with people of the ENTJ personality.

Mindfulness Plan

Physical

To develop a mindfulness practice plan, I have two consider four main aspects. Specifically, I will consider physical aspects, rhythmic/vital aspects, mental/emotional aspects and spiritual/biographical aspects. For instance, I intend to improve my physical wellness by running every early in the morning. This owes to my belief that an ability to run every day without missing a single day translates to my ability to meet my daily objectives. It is because having the required energy to run every day will also transfer the same attitude to my work. I also intend to improve my physical wellness by maintaining a healthy and steady weight. It is because maintaining a steady and healthy weight will provide me with the required health to complete my objectives. Specifically, healthy people do not face health obstacles such as blood pressure and high levels cholesterol. As a result, I will be able to focus on my daily objectives without facing health challenges.

Vital/Rhythmic

Most professionals attest to the fact that work-life balance is a problem to their wellbeing. Considering the problem, I intend to maintain a healthy work-life balance, which I believe will increase my productivity. As evidence, a healthy work-life balance will provide me with a healthy emotional state, which will improve my productivity in the workplace. Specifically, I intend to ensure that I spend enough time with my family and still have enough time for my career. I intend to do this by carrying work at home and spending time on it after my family goes to sleep. Critical to the discussion is the fact that I have to maintain a stabilized circadian rhythm in order to remain productive. Even though I will spend time on my work after my family goes to sleep, I realize that I must also plan to obtain enough sleep every day, which will also ensure that I am not exhausted to continue with my daily obligations.

Mental/Emotional

I strongly inscribe to the philosophy that education knows no boundaries. In simple terms, I believe that education is meant for everyone and is vital for continued development and growth. As a result, I believe that I have to continue educating myself because it does not only promote career growth, but also promote personal growth. It follows that I will continue educating myself by taking professional courses for personal development and career fulfillment. I also intend to develop my emotional status by improving my ability to take on emotionally challenging duties. As mentioned before, it will complete such tasks by working together with executives because such they will provide me with moral support to complete emotionally challenging tasks. As a result, I will emulate their toughness and merge it with my personality. This will ensure that I develop not only emotionally, but intellectually too.

Biographical/spiritual

I intend to improve on my spiritual beliefs and wellbeing by realizing that I need to uphold my childhood spiritual beliefs. As a result, the spiritual foundation laid out for me by my parents has been rudimental on the subject of my morality. However, I have also noticed that my spiritual beliefs are deteriorating because of my lack of worship. It follows that I will strengthen my spirituality by revisiting my spiritual foundation and taking time to worship. I also believe that the same should be transferred to my children because of the effect spirituality has had on my morality. Consequently, I have to instill spiritual beliefs in my children during their early childhood. This owes to the reality it will be possible for them to accept spiritual teachings when they are still young. In fact, teenagers are known to resist even the most correct directives, which justify the need to impart religious beliefs in my children when they are still young.

Healing Environments

The body-and-mind and the mind-body-spirit healing environments have common elements of internal, interpersonal, behavioral, and external environments. For instance, the mind-body healing environment argues that illness and injuries that affect an individual’s body could also affect the individuals mind. As a result, the mind-body physical environment posits that in order to cure a physical illness that affects the body, medical practitioners should also examine whether the illness also affects the mind. As a result, heal the body and mind simultaneously. Similarly, the mind-body-spirit holds a similar philosophy implying that they common internal environment. This owes to the reality that both healing environments require medical professionals to must examine the internal aspects of the body before administering cures to patients. It is also notable that both healing environments have similar intrapersonal elements because both environments argue that personal relationships affect the healing of patients. In short,

Critical to the discussion is the fact that the body-and-mind and the mind-body-spirit healing environments have similar internal environments. As evidence, the mind-body-spirit healing environment, like the mind-body, argues that patients’ state of mind must be examined and cured before curing physical elements of the patient. In doing so, nurses should talk to patients to diagnose whether any external factors contribute to their illness. It is then that nurses proceed to provide remedies to the physical illness of the patient. Additionally, they should also try to alter a patient’s behavior in order to transform their thoughts and heal the mind. It owes to the reality that human behavior defines their thoughts, which affects the mind. Thus, it is evident that the body-and-mind and the mind-body-spirit healing environments have similar internal and behavioral environments because they require medical professionals to examine and cure a patient’s state of mind, which could involve behavioral changes.

Using the Similarities in my Current Healthcare Setting

Apparently, the body-and-mind and the mind-body-spirit have common elements of internal, interpersonal, behavioral, and external environments, which could promote professional presence in my current healthcare setting. For example, I realize the need to use behavioral therapy to facilitate healing among patients. Critical to the discussion is the fact that I must apply my interpersonal skills to when dealing with patients. It owes to the truth that modifying behavior among patients requires nurses to interact with patients directly. Further, I will apply the same skills when talking with patients with an aim of healing their thoughts. As a result, using my interpersonal skills will not only improve my confidence in my patients, but also my patients’ confidence in me.

Ultimately, I will apply knowledge from the similarities between the healing environments to maintain my patients’ physical wellbeing. Specifically, I will talk to my patients with an aim of determining whether their intrapersonal relationships could be the cause for their conditions. Critical to the discussion is the fact I will avoid being judgmental when talking to my patients in order to improve professional integrity. Thus, improve their physical wellness. This demonstrates that knowledge gained from the similarities between the healing environments will be useful in promoting professional presence in my current setting.
