Question 1
APA style is used to document ideas in writing because many times writers use other people’s ideas as part of their written works and as such, they need to state to the reader that the idea is not original. Original ideas do not need citations, as they are the author’s own creation, as they have not been borrowed from other writers. In-text citations pinpoint the ideas that have been borrowed from other authors at the exact point that they have been used in a research article. The in-text citation usually takes the format of the author and the date in years when the borrowed work was written; it is usually enclosed in brackets at the end of a statement. The article summarized last week was written by Coltrane (1997) about families and the equality of the male and female genders. Coltrane argues that gender equity shall only be attained once men start taking care of household chores and the raising of children, which are roles largely delegated to women (Coltrane, 1997).
Question 2
A direct quotation under the APA sixth edition referencing is usually enclosed in quotation marks and centered in a block of text within the written material. The authors name and date are usually appended at the end of the quotation. For example, Coltrane (1997) said the following regarding gender equity in the home:
There are mixed views among Americans when it comes to the issue of gender equity with majority holding the view that both men and women should be treated equally without discrimination, but in reality, ones gender actually determines a person’s quality of life, opportunities and other chances (p. 31).
This is an example of a block quotation from the essay summarized last week. A quotation that is not a block quotation is usually enclosed in quotation marks.
