Answer
American Cultures and Subcultures
Culture is defined as shared practices, beliefs, or standards by a particular social group. Subculture on the other hand is described as the set of standards, beliefs, and practices shared by a given group within a culture.
The main culture in the United States is the American culture which defines how the citizens in this country present themselves. Other cultures under the main umbrella include Asian Americans, African Americans, and Irish Americans. Notably, these cultures are distinguished based on their racial and ethnic affiliation (Ovserman, 2017). Examples of subcultures on the other hand include the youths, LGBTQ, the disabled, military, and parents or caregivers. These subcultures are defined by different aspects. For instance, the LGBTQ is described by the gender and sexual aspects while the disability subculture is defined by one’s challenges including being deaf, blind, or immobilized. Subcultures can also be described by the social-economic status where there are the poor, middle class, and the rich. Age as a defining factor for subcultures distinguishes people according to the period they were born. Such include children, the youth, adults, and the aged. Two major subcultures that have been defined by a specific name are the aged and the youth. These two can be described as baby boomers and millennial generation terms. While the baby boom generation is described as individuals born when the world was transforming with regards to technology, the millennials are described by aspects such as narcissism.
The Southern area in the United States is characterized by the highest crime rate. Dangerous areas in America with high crime rate per 100000 individuals are Alaska, New Mexico, Nevada, Tennessee, and Louisiana. According to the FBI, these areas are characterized by crimes such as rape, robbery, murder and nonnegligent homicide, robbery, aggravated assault, and robbery. There are a number of aspects explaining the reason for the high crime rates in these regions. These include poor relationships between the police and the communities. A subculture that seems to describe most of these areas based on the social, economical statuses. In these areas, most of them are characterized by poverty which according to Brown (2018) has a significant correlation with high crime levels. With most people living below their means and in poverty conditions, there is a high crime rate. In Alaska, despite there being hardly any areas for people to live, the cities and clusters existing record high crime rates including murder, assault, and rape.
Miami is identified as among the best places to visit in America. However, there are regions with high crime. Two cities conducive for crime include Florida City and Opa-Locka which have a high number of crimes per 100000 individuals. While Florida City has 2551 number of crimes in every 100000, Opa-Locka records 2807 crimes per the same population (Vassolo, 2018). As noted by the FBI, violent crimes including manslaughter, robbery, rape, and aggravated assault were identified as major challenges in these areas. Notably, aggravated assaults were the most reported which average 64.3%. These areas were noted to have high crime rates based on their low social-economic statuses. This was further demonstrated in the criteria used to examine the neighbourhoods. The areas were described by high unemployment rates, less income among the individuals, and less population density. A major characteristic about Miami is that there are neighbourhoods for every individual. Other cities in Miami conducive to crime include Overtown, Little Haiti, Wynwood, and Model City.
