A2. Extended Abstract
Word Count: 300 (does not include references)
Write an abstract that could be used for an academic conference about diversity and the representation of otherness in New Zealand’s news media.
Suggested steps:
1. Chose a minority group to look at. It is highly recommended that you limit your research to matters of gender and ethnicity, e.g. Women, Maori, or Chinese.
2. Chose one print publication to focus on. Ideally, you will use a major metropolitan daily, e.g. the New Zealand Herald.
3. Chose one limitation: (a) close analysis of 10+ articles that are all about one developing story. The “story†(that the 10+articles talk about) must focus on or afford significant attention to the otherness you have chosen to study, (b) cover-to-cover analysis (excluding inserts) for two weeks.
Requirements:
You must include a title for the research/abstract. See other Journalism Studies abstracts for acceptable examples.
You must include between 4 and 6 keywords that accurately summarize the essence of the project and would help other researchers find your work in a database.
You must also prepare one slide or graphic that you would use at the conference that illustrates your key findings. Your slide or graphic can be included in the same document after the references section. It is not included in your word count.
Your writing must conform to the normative standards and requirements for academic writing.
Your abstract must be informative AND contain at least your research topic, research question(s), participants, methods, results, data analysis, and conclusions. You may also include possible implications of your research and future work you see connected with your findings.
Unlike ‘normal’ abstract you must use and include in-text references and a ‘References’ section. Your references section is not part of the word count.Notes:
Don’t be fooled. This is much harder than it may first appear. An abstract requires some of the highest degrees of economy and precision in writing—EVERY word counts.
Writing an abstract also presupposes that you really know what you are talking about. In this case it means that you will need to have undertaken an extensive program of research and probably written it up to at least first draft stage (if not further).

Answer
The research topic relates to the misrepresentation of women in the news media, and particularly the New Zealand Herald. This research deals with the problem of how women are mainly overlooked or annihilated on the basis of news media. The topic is important as gender equality is currently an emergent issue being pursued in the entire world. The news media represents one of the most prevalent cases of gender inequality in favour of men. The research methodology in this context is data from secondary sources. Most of my information was derived from a careful analysis of the depiction of women in the New Zealand Herald over the past decade. Consequently, my findings brought me to conclude that gender inequality does exist within the news media in New Zealand. Firstly, the ratio of female to male journalists borders on 0.37 to 0.63 whereby men are listed as having written the most stories in the edition (Hill, Tait, Schoultz, & Tapalea, 2016). Additionally, female sources for information are relatively fewer than male sources. Notably, these two factors impact on the quality of the stories edited. I also found that women are mostly identified based on their private identities like ‘wife’ as opposed to their public identities like ‘manager (Miller, 2015). Basically, women are underrepresented in areas to do with business and journalism but overrepresented in areas such as modelling and advertisements. I found several stories with stereotypic notions whereby women are reprimanded for not obliging their apparent roles (New Zealand Herald, 2009). Moreover, most of the stories on violence had female victims who are referred to in stereotypic titles. Lastly, advertisements are prone presenting women on the basis of their sexual appeal as opposed to men.
In conclusion, my findings signified that women are either misrepresented or underrepresented in specific areas.
Keywords: women violence, women journalists, women stereotypic views, news media, New Zealand Herald.
