Answer

Task conflict is a situation in which people have different viewpoints on certain decisions. Task conflict is likely to create disharmony among group members and interfere with interpersonal relations (Guenter, 2016). Accordingly, when members of group disagree about contents of their opinions, sometimes some of them might feel threatened and intellectually intimidated and thus and thus disengage himself and his ideas from the group. However, this would also depend on the maturity levels of members of such groups (Guenter, 2016). When a group has mature members, they would understand that their opinions must not always be right and the fact that the group fails to admit incorporate them should not create any disharmony.

Task conflict is also likely to derail the group’s activities. Accordingly, when members become uninterested in the group due to task conflict and the fear of contribution to group`s affairs, the group will take longer time to achieve their objectives (Guenter, 2016). Some people do like when their opinion is challenged often and as such would prefer to keep silent to avoid disagreements and opinion conflicts (Guenter, 2016). When significant members of the group decide to withdraw their contribution to the group`s thought process, it is likely that group would run out of ideas, a situation which would impact on its progress.

Task conflict might also lead to employee anxiety and job dissatisfaction. Due to such anxiety, the group members would increasingly be complaining over issues and likely to impact on individual productivity (Guenter, 2016). It makes people lose their confidence in the group and in the ability to contribute towards the group`s affairs. When individual performance reduces, it negatively impacts the overall group productivity since each individual is integral to the group`s performance. Therefore, task conflict is not health for the well-being of the group due to the associated tension and anxiety.

Lastly, due to task conflict, most members are likely to abscond or abstain from group meetings. They loose interest the group and even in their job. As a result, they make excuses for not coming to group meetings such as feigning sickness or other reasons to justify why they kept off the group meetings and their jobs in general (Lee, 2019). This not only affects the group`s productivity due to reduced staff but also demoralizes other members` commitment to the group. They start seeing the group as collapsing and thus sees no need to stay committed on a group whose future they can’t predict. Also, the organization might decide to disband the group when it realizes that members have internal conflicts that impede the group`s performance and productivity (Lee, 2019). The long-term impact of task conflict might be on the employee relationship. it might lead to formation of factions within the group and destroy organization`s integration.
