Social Media Influence on Future Employment
Employers have been reported to rely on social media information to assess their potential candidates in many organizations today. According to Grasz (2014), 43% of employers use social media data to evaluate a candidates’ social life and relationships. The career builder asserts that 51% of potential employees have declined the consent of the content found on their social media, these include nudeness, drunkard scenes, and crime-like posts. However, content that positively promotes job qualifications, creates a motivational image and enhances advanced communication have allowed potential employees to secure jobs in organizations. These sets of information are useful to the employer in various ways. For instance, they give an impression of the person they are intending to hire for a job and in practice show how the employee will be cautious in the professional world. People’s personalities are well defined by what others say. To create personal professional branding, individuals should practice maintaining a positive perception of their-self through social media and online platforms. This study aims at exploring various aspects of social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snap Chat, and a host of others in relation to an individual’s future employment.
Negative Factors
Consider a popular lawyer Gretchen Whitmer who violates orders and appears on social media platforms (Morabia, 2021). Conflicts arise between professional and personal identities as they may be difficult to navigate from what appears on the online platform. Many people fear to look deceptive or fake, especially to those who truly know them. In this matter, they build an online personality that appears to be pleasing and thus hiding their identities. There is a fabrication of information on social media that has created a feeling of suppression and false perception about an individual. There is a widespread of social media judgments that create criticism and fear for oppression by the people who create an alignment of their real lives to what they expect the audience to see. These have resulted in lots of fabrication of content to suit an individual and have led to content bias and misinterpretation. Photoshopping is on the rise for most of the online identities that people use. This gives employers an image of the person they are hiring based on dishonesty and non-transparency.
Positive Factors
Organizations and businesses have resulted in the use of social media for promotions and this gives online build identities for people with positive perception an opportunity to gain prominence. Earlier, people and organizations relied on relations, word of mouth, and in-person connections to understand more about a potential candidate for employment. Today, technology has embraced them with a variety of tools and platforms that help them accustom persona to their employees (Grasz, 2014). Social media has enhanced freedom of expression for people. The introduction of social media platforms has enabled individuals to freely express themselves around the globe without tension in the profession and personal life.
Social media constraints used by organizations today
Today, many organizations are building their brand reputation using social media (Grasz, 2014). Employees have been constrained to maintain positive reflections on the company brand by deviating from criticism and negativity towards organizations’ products marketed on social media. Strategies have also been embedded by organizations that allow employees to safeguard information by separating personal online usage with professional material which has enabled the protection of professional reputation. Implementation of audience freedom has also been influenced by organizations, this facilitates users with a variety of options while accessing social media information. For example, separation of contacts in platforms has led to online freedom where users express themselves authentically while maintaining their appearance to workmates restricted.
Opinion to Change or not to Change Own use of Social Media
Yes, there is a need to change the use of social media platforms after learning many facts that may barre the potentiality of an organization to hire me for future employment opportunities. Many employers are using social media platforms to evaluate their potential candidates, therefore, the upcoming job seekers have an opportunity to build a professional persona with online platforms to attract future employers. There is a professional challenge with many upcoming job seekers today in maintaining a positive appearance due to unfiltered self (Grasz, 2014). The evolution of soft power is the future for job seekers today, for example, the current value of a company is not dependent on equipment and or stock of goods, but on the reputation and relationship, with the growing technology. Material tangibles such as education and titles on people’s resumes are not weighed as soft power that is personal creativity and online image and these can all be projected from an online identity.
Material on Social Media that can Cost Somebody to Lose Consideration for Employment
The true identity of an individual can well be explained by what others talk when that person is absent (Grasz, 2014), therefore, contents that include inappropriate photos, provocative comments, the use of criticism on previous employers, and use of drugs have been among the reasons why potential employers decline to offer jobs for many potential applicants. The digital world has promoted freedom of expression, although this does not create an opportunity for the misuse and contradiction of identity. Advanced user functionality should be used by future job seekers with authenticity and professionality to secure better chances for the future.
In conclusion, the development of online identity that conforms to professional standards is desirable for upcoming job seekers to align their goals with their persona. Customized strategies in the use of social media platforms can aid people in creating a balance between professional reputation and online content. Sharing of contacts across media platforms should follow strict criteria created by the social media user to filter professional contacts from relationship contacts. These will enhance professional benefits without affecting individuals’ genuine identities.
