Answer
Evidence-Based Practice Barriers
Different barriers can hinder nursing practice from achieving the 90% goal of being evidence based such as insufficient skills and knowledge among nurses and inadequate support provided by nurse managers and leaders to encourage Evidence-Based Practice (EBP). Education has acted as a high factor that hinders implementation of EBP in nursing since nurse who graduated over 20 years ago did not obtain training on evidence bases approach to providing care (Mahmoud & Abdelrasol, 2019). Furthermore, currently, educators still allocate more of their time teaching nursing students on how to engage in rigorous form of research instead of on utilization and applicability of research in nursing practice (Mahmoud & Abdelrasol, 2019).
The inadequate support provided by nurse managers and leaders to support EBP is also another hindrance. Lack of support from nurse leaders and managers has hindered implementation of evidence-based practice, hence the slow progress towards the achievement of the set goal in that nurses fail to see the importance of it. Managers and leaders are critical persons who have the capacity to offer the required support for an effective EBP implementation. Moreover, nurse managers and leaders are also required to act as role models to encourage other nurses to follow their example when it comes to the consistent EBP application in practice (Mahmoud & Abdelrasol, 2019).
The lack of education barrier can be addressed through professional training and development actions. In this case, nurses are required to undergo through effective training and development to enhance their knowledge and skills in implementing EBP. This will make it easier for nursing professionals to implement the EBP to meet the required goal by the Institute of Medicine. Managers should be guided on the importance of offering support to nurses to implement evidence-based approach to care to boost their motivation on its usage.
