Answer
ADDICTIVE DISORDERS
- National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is a national agency that supports scientific research on drug use and the consequence of drug abuse. The organization focuses on the detection of drug abuse trends and responds to them, and also tries to understand how these drugs work in the brain and the body and develops a new view of the treatment and prevention of disorders associated with drug abuse (Gust, 2021).
- NIDA also supports research to identify the consequences of drug abuse and addiction.
- The organization provides enhanced methods to prevent drug abuse.
- Tampa Psychedelic Society aims at connecting people in the greater Tampa society who are interested in psychedelic substances. The organization also brings the individuals to discuss their psychedelic experiences and how they have changed their lives.
- Turning Point in Tampa is a facility that provides treatment services to patients suffering from addiction and eating disorders. Patients who complete the facility’s residential treatment program later continue their recovery through the facility’s Intensive Outpatient and Day Treatment programs to enhance the patient’s continuous recovery.
- Patients present marked mydriasis ( pupil dilation) mainly when they use lysergic acid diethylamide (Aday et al., 2021). Hallucinogen affects the brain’s neurotransmission causing the dilation of the pupil.
- The patient may also present nausea and vomiting caused by mushroom poisoning after taking hallucinogenic mushrooms. This poisoning results from the patient misidentifying the type of mushroom and using a poisonous variety like Amanita phalloides (Singh & Routledge, 2020).
- Providers should know that the patient would experience hyperthermia, which occurs when the body’s heat-regulating mechanism is impaired. Hyperthermia is observed after using several hallucinogens that have reacted, thus indicating dextromethorphan ingestion.
- Patients should know that hallucinogens such as Psilocybin may damage their brain causing them to lose their memory. Patients with these disorders need to know that they will also experience hallucinations primarily as the hallucinogens alter their brain chemical serotonin. This hallucinogen will cause them to see images and hear sounds that seem real to them but are not real.
- Patients will also experience hypertension (Buddy, 2020). Hypertension occurs mainly in cases where the effects of the hallucinogen are not complicated.
- Family members should know that hallucinogen disorders may cause the patient to lose weight and not be easily recognized. They may not hear from the patient when they may be living in the streets or overdosed.
