  1. Question

What was your favorite thing about your professional practice experience?   What was your most valuable learning experience?

    Student 1

My overall professional practice experience was wonderful. I would not change my experience at all. It is so hard to determine what my favorite thing was about it. If I had to choose, I would say it was seeing the Health Information Management field come into a full picture for me. It was great to see how all of the tasks within the department comes together visually and experiencing it rather than reading it in a book. Since I do have a job working in this field already, it was even a better experience I could have asked for because now I understand how scanning is done when I need to view a consent or other type of document or processing requests in other systems. With this experience, I can now say that I understand how the field works. Everyone that I worked with and job shadowed was very nice and informative about their positions as well as their daily tasks.

The most valuable learning experienced I took away from the professional practice experience would be that teamwork plays a major role throughout this department. Without one job in the field, it would not be possible for others to complete their tasks either. For example, if there are not many employees for indexing and scanning, then a release of information specialist will not be able to locate the proper documents needed. Basically, it is a domino effect. Without one job, it is not possible to do the other ones.

I have worked in Health Information Management for 25 years, I have performed every job in Health Information Management from Release of Information, file clerk, medical transcription, cancer registry, ICD-9 coding, CDI, charge master, EHR administrator, and Director.  I love my job and i feel like it is what I was meant to do, but my absolute favorite job was being a cancer registrar.  I felt like I was actually making a huge difference with using the data that I collected, comparing it to State and National statistics and I used  that information to create pamphlets to educate patients.  I have attached one of my tri-fold pamphlets that I worked with Marketing to create for breast cancer awareness month at WBH.  It was very empowering to know that the information that I was gleaning from the documentation and entering into the Kentucky Cancer Registry Database was used in educating patients on survival statistics and treatment options. My retirement plan is to go back into registry work, possibly volunteer at a Cancer center.  It was a very fulfilling career

I hope that everyone taking this course finds their niche in HIM and can really feel that they are making a difference.  I encourage my employees to advance, to always look up and strive for their dream job or what they were meant to do.

I was fortunate to be able to complete my PPE experience within my own health care system. This project was beneficial and productive for my HIM department of Documentation Integrity. The interaction with additional professionals such as clinical nurse Managers and ITS analyst  gave me a different perspective of required elements for documentation and clinical work flow systems within Epic. This exposure added  additional peer relationships and contacts for me  to use in future department projects. Working with the “Behavioral  Health” clinical team helped me to understand the need for procedure documentation standardization  across  the health system. The HIM profession is continuing to change with the EHR, regulatory, compliance, and patient portal  standards. I am grateful that I am able to apply my educational background to  my practical day to day work activities  and functions. I hope to see you all in HIM 499, for our final stretch of continued education and receiving our RHIA credential

Reflection Paper: Favorite and Valuable Learning Experience about my Professional Practice Experience

I had a great time during my professional practical experience. In other words, I got a chance to network and interact with a number of professionals in the HIM department who were very helpful in showing me around and guiding me through the HIM processes including acquiring, analyzing, and sharing information. I also got to understand the relevance of protecting patient information, especially in this digital error where anyone can access data easily through the use of technology. In this regard, my most valuable experience was learning how to transmit data to meet the professional, legal, and administrative needs of the healthcare delivery system. Similarly, I learnt the significance of team work in the HIM department, especially in simplifying work and enhancing performance. That is to say, team work makes it easier for professionals in the HIM department to carry out their duties efficiency and minimize conflicts thus enhancing their overall productivity. It is in this regard that I look forward to apply these insightful lessons in my future career.

In conclusion, my practical experience in the HIM department was significant in teaching me a number of valuable lessons such as the importance of team work and how to transmit data across different units to facilitate effective healthcare delivery.  I also interacted with various professionals who were very resourceful and whom I believe will be an asset in my future career.  I am really grateful for this experience and will do my best to apply the lessons and skills that I learnt in my current interactions and future career. I would, therefore, recommend this experience to any student aspiring to work in the HIM department in the future.
