Answer
The Christian Concept of the Imago Dei
The Christian concept of the Imago Dei translates to ‘the image of God’ in English. For Christians, it refers to the belief that human beings were created in the image of God. It is a belief that dignifies every human being despite their social, mental or even physical status (Cherry, 2017). Only human beings are said to be created in the image of God. This belief is derived from the Bible, in the book of Genesis where the accounts of creation are recorded. However, it does not only refer to physical likeness of God, but also to His morals, spirituality, and intellectuality.
The concept of the Imago Dei is important to healthcare since it calls for all Christians to follow that which is expected of them in relation to the characteristics of God. Since God is compassionate, Christians today are expected to showcase the same when caring for the sick. It means being patient, understanding, and sensitive towards them. Healthcare workers follow this concept, which is why they tend to do all that is needed to care for the dying so that they may experience a peaceful death (Cherry, 2017). The relationship between the healthcare worker and the patient is transformed once this concept is taken into consideration. This concept is relevant since it ensures that the society’s understanding of what human rights should entail is promoted. It is the guiding formula that is used in the legal system that pertains to health related services.
In conclusion, the concept of Imago Dei is very important in healthcare since it is the idea from which the rules and regulations regarding patient care have been formulated. It is what is used to determine what is right and wrong. Hence, it is an important concept that all healthcare providers should be educated on.
