Literature review
QUESTION
The literature review is key to any research study or article development. It is important to review the literature within your own discipline, but also other disciplines which may confront similar issues or have related concerns. For example, practice issues in other health related fields often correspond to those confronted in nursing. Nursing education concerns may also be found in academic research within other disciplines outside of the health care field.
• What is the purpose of conducting an organized literature review?
• How will you approach this aspect of your research?
• What literature other than nursing literature do you feel may offer useful information?
• How might you incorporate these ideas into your proposal?
• Provide an example of a piece of literature that supports your topic and provide a brief summary of the article.
Responses need to address all components of the question, demonstrate critical thinking and analysis, and include peer reviewed journal evidence to support the student’s position.

Answer
PICOT Question: In patients who have experienced stroke (P), how does being a smoker (I) compared to a nonsmoker (C) developed higher risk of recurrence (O) during the first 1 year after stroke?
The purpose of conducting an organized literature review is to identify and appreciate contributions made by others in a field or about a particular issue. Besides, literature review helps a researcher to identify research gaps and appropriate methodology for studying a given issue. In addition, literature helps to provide information for the introduction and background section of a particular topic of interest. Literature review is considered as the foundation of getting high quality evidence to inform practice (Maggio, Sewell, & Atino, Jr., 2016). I will conduct review of literature by using search terms and conducting the search in evidence-based databases such as PubMed, CINAHL Cumulative Index, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. I will employ an exclusion and exclusion criteria to conduct the literature search (Pati & Lorusso, 2018). Apart from nursing, literature on medicine and psychology will provide useful information in nursing practice. On the other hand, literature review will help me to establish a background and identify gaps in my proposal. Chen et al.’s (2019) study may help support my research topic (Refer to my PICOT question above) since it describes correlation between smoking status and recurrence of stroke.
