    1. QUESTION

    Speed Drafting Session

Opening: Incorporate narrative, and/or make connections between your topic and another seemingly unrelated, but relevant and accessible example (using analogies/metaphors, etc.). Engage the reader by catching their attention.  Begin to build up to your claim. (15 min.)

Thesis: State the position that is to be argued. Include your reasons. For example, Puppies are cute because [reasons].  (5 min.)

Body paragraphs: Based on the previous work in the early outline and planning handout, begin writing your paper. Start writing and do not stop. You should go back later to proofread, edit, and add APA citations. The purpose of this task to get most of the down on paper in one sitting.

You may choose to organize your draft by using sub-headings (what kind of subheadings then might you use and why?)

Or by a logical progression of thought (how will you use transitions to move from one point to another?)

You may also choose to continue with a narrative structure but begin to incorporate your research here.  (30 min.)

Refutation: Address the opposing opinions to your own. Who has a different perspective and why? How might you incorporate them into your paper?

    • Your research may help illustrate the opposing view or help you in refuting that view…or both. (10 min.)

Closing: Revisit your introduction and bring your reader back to that starting point. Leave your reader with something to think about…allude to the wider (societal?) significance of this discussion, a call to action, or reiterate the need for continuing discussion. (10 min.)

Once you have completed this draft, save it and submit it to IvyLearn for the Informal Writing assignment on the due date.

You will receive points for completing the speed draft and not yet graded on the quality of the work.

Evaluate and Revise your Rough Draft:

    • Introduction— How do you go about grabbing and keeping the writer’s attention in this draft?
    • Thesis/Central Claim: Paraphrase this
    • Organization: How might you rearrange these sections to present most effectively your argument?
    • Main points/reasons are clear
    • Logical progression of thought
    • Addresses a refutation/opposing or alternate view
    • Support – Use of research
    • Begin to incorporate research as support for your argument.
    • To illustrate the topic sentences in the body of the essay as needed.
    • Audience—Who is your intended audience?
      1. How can you speak more directly to that audience in this draft?
    • Audience Appeals—Is there a good balance?
    • Appeal to emotion
    • Appeal to reason/logic
    • Author Creditability (ethos) –How well do you present yourself as an authority on this topic? Are you reliable and trustworthy, especially when citing sources carefully and correctly?

Speed Draft: Drug Abuse among Teenagers

Opening: Criss Jami once stated “an over-indulgence of anything, even something as pure as water, can intoxicate.” All drugs that are considered harmless such as alcohol, cannabis, and synthetic cannabis can be extremely intoxicating when consumed in enormous quantities. Such has been the case with drug abuse among the youth that continues to have far reaching consequence among teenagers and society at large.

Thesis: Drug abuse among the youth should be eradicated as it negatively impacts their academic performance, physical development, and adult life, and result in numerous death cases

Body Paragraphs: Drug abuse by the youth negatively affects their physical and educational development. According to Chakravarthy et al (2013), drug abuse among teenagers negatively impacts their physical and educational growth by resulting in school underperformance, early pregnancy, juvenile delinquency, and depression. Apart from impact teenagers’ academic and physical growth in a negative way, drug abuse, accounts for numerous cases of youth related deaths.  In 2011 alone, 211,000 teenagers lost their lives due to drug-related cases (Somani & Meghani, 2016). Besides, drug abuse also impacts youths’ adulthood in negative ways. Teenagers who abuse drugs become drug addicts in their adulthood, which in turn  leads to the damage of households and the community at large (Nahvizadeh et al., 2014; Somani & Meghani, 2016). Despite the negative effects of drugs abuse among the youth, opponents and some youth claim that not all drugs consumed by teenagers are harmful in that some of these drugs such as marijuana have medicinal properties.  However, the abuse of any drug is associated with harmful effects. In addition, the medicinal value of drugs such as marijuana can only be experienced when they are manufactured according to health standards and prescribed by qualified health practitioners (Pednekar, 2016). Since there is no regulatory mechanism to govern the overuse of such drugs among the youth, there is a significant need to abolish this behavior.

Closing: In conclusion, the abuse of drugs among the youth should be eradicated as it negatively impacts the youths’ educational and physical development, results in numerous death cases among the youth, and impact their adulthood in a negative way. As such, all stakeholders including teachers, parents, youth, and government agencies should join hands in eliminating this menace from the society.
