Answer
Reduction of Tropical Forest
One the news that has made headline in New York Times is the reduction of tropical forest despite policies that most countries as well as organizations have put to reduce deforestation. The article that is titled ‘Going in the Wrong Direction’: More Tropical Forest Loss in 2019’ was published on 2nd June 3, 2020 by Henry Fountain. The article asserts that the tropical forest has reduced in size as compared to 2018, despite campaigns and policies that have been put to save the forest (Fountain, 2020). According to the article, the forest area that was lost in 2019 years is three percent more than the one that was lost in 2018 and the largest recorded since 2002.
While most studies reveal that human activities are the leading cause of deforestation of the tropical forest, the article reveals that several incidences of fire have also contributed to the loss of forest. The logging of forests is on the rise despite the strict rules. The author terms international efforts of reducing deforestation rhetoric since there is no significant change that has been witnessed. The country that has ben adversely mentioned as the leading cause of loss of tropical forest is Brazil. Although the loss is blamed on continuous incidences of fires in the country (), believes that a majority of the forest has been cleared for agricultural purposes.
The article assert that there are consequences that have already been witnessed as a result of deforestation. The tropical forest is one of the regions that determine the pattern of rainfall in most parts of the world (Giam, 2017). That article argues the pattern of rainfall has been changing as a result of deforestation. Additionally, it is estimated that loss of primary tropical forest in 2019 resulted to more than 2 billion’s tons of carbon dioxide or more than the emissions from all on-road vehicles in the United States in a typical year.
