In the article entitled, The Key to Safety: A Healthy Workplace, Davis Stephanie main focus of the article is explaining key areas that can promote healthy workplaces in healthcare. In this regard, the Davis (2018) starts by highlighting how it is crucial to perform checks and audits frequently as a means of knowing if the laid down safety protocols are being followed or not. Ideally, according to the author, there will be safety and quality challenges if safety standards exist but are not adhered to by the stakeholders within a healthcare facility. The article also insists that it is ideal for all stakeholders within the healthcare realm to be aware of all occupational hazards. It is in knowing the risks and associated causes that one can avoid them. Primarily, Davis (2018) points out monitoring hand hygiene as well as using gloves as the first approaches which can help increase safety in care.
The author highlights sources of risks that can affect safety in healthcare. In this regard, she sees modes and means through which some infections are transmitted as the main source of concern for stakeholders in the healthcare sector. In this regard, slips and falls, hand contamination, surgical smoke, and sharps injuries are the leading causes of low levels of safety in healthcare. Factors Affecting Organizational Culture
Several factors impact the culture of an organization either positively or negatively. Primarily, having effective leadership which results in proper top leadership principles results in positive impacts to organizational culture as all employees easily align with the desired behaviours of the organization. Similarly, creating awareness on the type of culture needed to all staff has a positive impact on organizational culture. In this regard, if people become aware of the behaviours expected of them, by their leaders, they are likely to depict the traits in their day to day activities thereby translating to sustainable organizational culture (Chappell et al, 2016). Lastly, proper recruitment and selection is essential in prompting the desired organizational culture as it leads to acquisition of right employees only who will abide by the provided organizational standards.
Factors which affect organizational culture negatively are mainly those which do not support the staff and stakeholders in their duties. Firstly, recruiting unsuitable staff makes it difficult to maintain organizational culture as those recruited will struggle abiding by the preferred behaviours within the organization. Similarly, unsafe working environment affects workers negatively which transfers to their organizational culture. Lastly, failing to create awareness among the essential stakeholders about the desired behaviours adversely affects the organizational culture.
Impact of Self-Care Impact on the Health of a Workplace
Self-care is essential in enhancing the health of a workplaces as it prevents occurrence of injuries by limiting modes of transmission of organizational hazards. Ideally, if every staff observers self-care principles, he or she will remain safe and healthy. As such, the organization will be considered a safe workplace.
Impact of Workplace Health on the Culture of an Organization
Better workplace health translates to a conducive working environment. In this setup, workers are motivated to carry out their duties well and in line with the organization’s directives as they do not worry about their health or safety (Grawitch & Ballard, 2016). Moreover, they feel that the organization cares for them, a fact which encourages them to also behave as expected of them by the company hence resulting in a stable organizational culture.
Findings from the Article That Supports a Healthy Workplace
The main finding is the shortage in nurses. Ideally, occupational hazards were found to be the leading cause of nurses leaving their profession (Steege, Boiano & Sweeney, 2016). Therefore, if workplaces in healthcare remain healthy, there is a possibility that shortage in healthcare staffing could be averted. Thus, it is ideal that workplaces remain healthy.
Methods to Improve Workplace Health
The primary technique for enhancing workplace health is by performing checks and audits frequently as a means of knowing if the laid down safety protocols are being followed or not. Secondly, it is ideal to create awareness among the stakeholders regarding health risks and hazards. This approach enables the stakeholders to be aware of causes of unhealthy workplaces and prevent them before they occur.
