VARK Analysis

            Everyone has a preferred means through which new concepts they want to learn should be presented to them. Some prefer visuals such as presentations while others like lecturers and demonstrations. To evaluate a person’s learning styles, several tools can be used and one of these tools is VARK, which refers to questionnaire that helps learners to know their learning preferences (Fleming, 2017). The questionnaire contains sixteen questions and generates scores that describe various sensory modalities that a user prefers. Results obtained from the questionnaire can demonstrate that a particular user prefers one modality or a combination of many modalities. This paper examines my learning experiences and compares my learning approaches to those suggested in the questionnaire. Further, it explains the influence of individual learning preference on health promotion, teaching, and learning.

Summary of Learning Strategies

            From the findings obtained in the questionnaire, it is evident that I prefer learning modalities that focus on aural, write/read, and kinesthetic. I scored highest in aural (11) and lowest in visual (2).  Other scored encompassed kinesthetic (8) and read/write (10). These score suggested that I prefer learning through reading, listening, and writing. Fleming (2017) posited that life is a multimodal and thus it is only in rare situation in which a single mode is used. When an individual scores uniformly in three or more preferences, such a person is viewed to have multidimensional learning preference. Multimodal learning preferences are of two forms namely and they include VARK type 1 and type 2. Essentially, type 1 is individuals who can adjust their learning preferences to accommodate their present situation (Fleming, 2017). In VARK type 1, users often adopt read/write preference to understand particular concepts and later shift to kinesthetic to gain practical skill. However, any person desire to use all their learning preferences usually adopts VARK Type 2. However, such individuals are unlikely to be satisfied until necessary inputs are given to them to facilitate their learning preferences. Consequently, they will take longer than expected to gather all the necessary information they require to understand the concepts

Preferred Learning Strategies

            From the VARK questionnaire outcomes mentioned above, I agree with the learning preferences illustrated above. From the outcomes outlined in the questionnaire, it is evident that like combining many learning styles and that to understand a particular concept better, I often use write/read and aural preferences and less of kinesthetic preference. The slowest score from visual preference indicate that it is an approach that I rarely use. When preparing for any assessment, I revise all the learning materials in my position by taking a keen look at examples provided in the course book. I also write down every concept that I have read and them reading these concepts loudly several times.

            The strategies identified from my questionnaire scores are similar to those from author’s present learning in several ways. First, some of my learning strategies depicted by the questionnaire results encompass reading notes loudly for aural preference, rewriting notes in reading and writing preference, as well as, using examples given in the course book and class notes to clearly understand the topic, especially for kinesthetic preference. Intuitively, the main difference between preferred and suggested learning methods is that the latter have exceptional learning strategies for almost every modality and that the author‘s preference overlaps various learning preferences. For example, the author’s suggested learning is aural that encompasses reading notes loudly while a suggested read/write approach is rewriting the notes repeatedly. Personally, I combine these strategies by reading written notes loudly and rewriting them numerous times. Without any doubt, the learning styles shown in the questionnaire illustrate specific techniques that the author adopts and given that he adopts various learning approaches, he is regarded as a VARK Type 2 user.

Impacts of Individual Learning Styles on Learners’ Degree to Understand and Perform Educational Activities

             A report by GCU (2011) stated that understand learning preference of each learner is essential to educators and learners. To educators, it assists them to tailor their materials to take into account different learning styles and approaches. For example, in a situation where the educator understands that his learners majorly prefer aural and read/write modalities, he is likely to incorporate lectures, notes, and readings to create a favorable learning environment where every learner can comfortably understand the learning concepts. On the other hand, in case the learners prefer visual and kinesthetic modalities, the educator can incorporate demonstrations, presentations and hands on learning in his class to improve the learning of such learners.

Individuals’ Learning Styles and Health Promotions

            When discussing health promotion and learning, it is prudent to consider the most appropriate ways through which patients learn, as well as, their learning abilities. Every nurse should educate patients to ensure that they understand everything. Inquiring from patients their preferred learning styles can improve the methods through which they gather information presented to them and this is likely to improve their outcomes (Edelman, Kudzma, & Mandle, 2014). Here, patients can be taught behavioral objective to modify various behaviors in their lives that can be detrimental to their health. Using learning styles preferred by patients can essentially enable patients to effectively gather information. In case the patients learn effectively by reading, then print off resources should be presented to them. Similarly, in case a patient is a visual learner, the healthcare promoter should provide them with charts, drawings and graphs that contain the necessary information. Similarly, aural learners listen to doctors and nurse and seek from them necessary questions they require to know.  More importantly, kinesthetic learner can view a depiction of skills and watch various films on the information of various goals.

            In conclusion, everyone learn differently.  It is important to learn every learning style because learners have various learning abilities. Educators should not hold on to a single learning style when teaching but instead should adopt a style that is preferred by learners. It is also important for health promoters to consider various learning styles of all patients when disseminating health information. Every nurse wants patients to recover and have a better life. Therefore, nurses must ensure that patients are taught effectively in their preferred language.
